Hey all,
I'm getting a friend back into 40k and he's pretty dead-set on starting Orks. I know an awful lot about killing Orks but not too much about making a list.

All we've decided on is that we'd like to write a 2000pt list, he really likes Ghazghkull and wants to include him and that a more mechanized force is desirable.

Any ideas anyone with some experience has are welcome :)

Thanks!

Well my secondary army is orks but i know nothing of mechanized orks i like to run the general horde of green blobs. but no matter what he does make sure he balances his CC with his Ranged Combat. I find it essential to any horde armies success. Hope i helped out.

Mechanized orks with lots of trukks tend to fail miserably so you'll probably be looking at battlewagons (always add at least 1 gun to avoid auto-immobilzed, but don't go overboard) loaded with shoota boyz(more efficient than sluggas) and Nobz (as an escort for Gaz). Don't forget to add at least 1 powerklaw to each mob.

A KFF Mek would help out with cover saves.

Lootas are gods-awful scary. Throw 20-30 of them in a list and stuff starts dying left and right.

Deff-Koptas with Rokkits can keep up with the wagons, scout, can provide some nice AP3 support, and contest objectives.

Throw up a list and we'll see how we can help out.

Not 100% sure how to proceed. My experience with actual list-building is limited to imperial/chaos armies so forgive any faux pas I've made.

Also Ghazghkull is too expensive if you ask me...

Advice please.

More Lootaz! Put em in a stationary Battlewagon with a Kannon (for the template) and rain death for 36" around. Avoid guns that are single-shot non-linked. You won't roll many 5s.

I'd consider going with mobs of 30 boyz. With I2 you aren't going to get many return attacks.

If you wanna go Mech, then you gotta take a Big Mek with a burna and kustom force field. I run 3 kans as a cover screen for my mob of boyz. The big mek is in there to make the kans obscured and repair any damage. Plus, the burna lets him flush out any weakly armored troops in cover.

Consider taking the Deffcoptas as 1 man units. A single kill will force a morale save for a 3-man unit.

I could easily condense the Deffkoptas into a singe unit of 5. That would help with the morale issue.

Not sure how I am to free up the points for more lootas or 30-man mobs.

The big Mek is a big thing I'm missing too I agree.

What do you think I can drop from the list to make room for some/all of these things?

Don't think you need any more big mobs! That lists pretty potent.

If you want more Lootas and a Mek, drop the 3rd battlewagon...got plenty of transport in there. Just remember to put the mek and a hard squad in one and drive it flatout at the badguys...

As for deffkoptas if you cut them down to a squad of 5, then you'll lose 1 (more points). But also remember...deffkoptas, short of building your own, or buying them off ebay only come in the blackreach box. And only come in 3's. So you'd need two boxes worth.

If you're bent on deffkoptas i'd say buy 2 AoBR boxes, flog the marines, the mini rule books and anything you don't want. Thats a good start, with you having plenty of good boyz, nobz and deffkoptas.

if your friend wants ghazgull--- then your list you are building for him should have ghazgull. It should not be tainted by thoughts of 'too expensive'.

Well we're sort of building it together lol.

It was actually his decision that Ghaz was too points heavy.

I'd drop the nobz down to normal ones (with a pain boy of course) and swap the doc for a KFF (obscured vehicles are awesome). Wagons only really need 2 Big Shootas.

Would take rokkits on the boyz rather than the shootas. You have plenty of volume fire in the list, but really need the high S, low AP shots.

With the extra points snag some more lootas and bump up the nob squad size a bit.

Okay, taking the advice I've gotten from everyone I've gathered the following:

1) Big squads of shoota boyz in battlewagons = win
2) KFF is necessary
3) Deffkoptas are so-so Lootas are better
4) Sorry Meganobz are too cool!

So here's the totally revamped list taking into account what I've heard from everyone.

+ Mad Dok Grotsnick [160]

+ Big Mek [123] (Rolls in Battlewagon with the smaller squad of shoota boyz)
- Power Klaw, Kustom Force Field, 'Eavy Armour, Bosspole, Ammo Runt

+ Meganobz [320]
- 5x Meganobz with Cybork Bodies
- 1x Meganob with Kombi-Skorcha & Cybork Body
- 1x Meganob with Kombi-Skorcha
+ Battlewagon [135]
- Deff Rolla, Red Paint Job, Grot Riggers, Armour Plates, 1x Big Shootas

+ Lootas [150]
- 10x Lootas

+ Ork Boyz [114]
- 19x Shoota Boyz

+ Ork Boyz [160]
- 1x Nob with Power Klaw & Bosspole
- 19x Shoota Boyz

+ Ork Boyz [160]
- 1x Nob with Power Klaw & Bosspole
- 19x Shoota Boyz

+ Ork Boyz [152]
- 1x Nob with Power Klaw & Bosspole
- 11x Boyz
- Trukk with Red Paint Job

+ Deff Dread [105] (for objective clearing)
- 3x DCCW & Skorcha; Armour Plates

+ Battlewagon [140]
- Deff Rolla, Red Paint Job, Grot Riggers, Armour Plates, 2x Big Shootas

Fair enough on the meganobz. Though on the battlewagons I'd actually advise against armoured plates. AV14 is hard to pop at long-range (as melta is the best way to kill them). Having them open-topped would allow you to: move 13" (w/ Red Paint Job) + 2" Disembark (actually a bit more the 2") + 6" Assault = 21" assault range.

If you're able to declare 'Waagh!' this increases another d6". Closed-Top really hinders that mobility.

IMO the KFF mek is too pricey. His only job is to get you up close unmolested by shooting. Give him the KFF and nothing else. Just add a Nob + Powerklaw + Bosspole to the smaller boys unit and throw in the KFF mek. Once you are up close the Mek has done it's job and isn't needed anymore.

Not quite sure on the Deff Dread. See how it works out for you, I have no experience in the matter.

Armoured plates = extra armour, so its still open-topped.

Dropping everything off the Mek and buying a nob with the same stuff is actually 5pts more expensive (nob = 40pts, meks gear = 35).

As for the deff dread I too am unsure...

Whoops, carry on then. Didn't have the codex right in front of me there.

Fair enough, only thing about the mek is that he can be singled out in CC.

You shouldn't have the Mek in combat. If you have him in btb in combat then the army is playing it wrong.

Personally i'd Fritz this force up and replace the Trukk Boyz with some Kommandoz. If you want, give the Lootaz a Trukk so that you technically keep the theme up.

Like the use of the Deff Dread. Now if only it could DS...

Mek in CC is a total failure. I know this from experience, but having him run behind your Kans or Deff Dread will make them obscured all day. I keep him in a mob of boyz to keep him from being singled out for shooting. When CC is imminent, move him out of your squad or way to the back and let the Boyz WAAAAGH on. The burna is just a nice way to shoot some hurt into guys with cover.

I like it a lot. I would consider dropping the Boyz in the trukk for possibly 'Ard boyz in a Trukk. The Trukk will be destroyed by turn 2-3, so a squad that small should have some extra protection.

Kommandos would be a cool idea too.

I really like the Deff Dread, but he won't be able to keep up with your main force. You'd want him close to the Mek ideally. My ork army is mostly footsloggers, so Dreads and Kans work pretty well with it.

MegaNobs!~!!!~!~!~!!!

I love Meganobs. I have always wanted to take a terminator set and a nobs and 'put' terminator armor on them. The ultimate insult! They killed your 1st company, and stole their armor!

Plus, it wouldn't fit, so it would look silly!

I agree! They're my favorite part too, They're - for all intents and purposes - 2 wound terminators with feel no pain...that's sick. And hey if there happens to be 6-7 of them with an attached HQ well that's the way the cookie crumbles ;)
