The post on the main page is the reason behind this question- Why are marines called marines?

I can understand the space bit (even if they do fight more on land than space) But why marines- they dont specialise in seaborn combat?

why not space rangers

Well I think it is a reasonable term actually, they are primarily deployed rapidly via ships (albeit space ships) and that degree of mobility is integral to their combat doctrine.

Marines go to war in ships. Space Marines go to war in space ships. The ship bit is just the delivery method. Space Marines also do alot of boarding actions against pirates and such.

The term Ranger is very US (and now very Buzz Lightyear 'Space Rangers'?), while the Royal Marines are well known for being hardasses.
