It is hard to think about Dark Vader and the Galactic Empire without having that "Imperial March" tune pop into your head. What theme songs might you apply to different Warhammer 40,000 armies? Tchaikovsky's "1812 Oveture" for the Valhallans? Some kind of heavy metal for the Necrons? Maybe "Wham!" or "Culture Club" for certain Elder craftworlds? What are the 40k top 40?

I'd like to see you list any other reason than "Apocalypse Now"...

on a similar note, how about "The Doors - The End" from the beginning of apoc

It reminds my conscripts that they are not coming back...

I also wholeheartedly agree with Hell March from red alert 1. Hell march 2 is also good, but 1 is much better.

Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" for the Space Wolves.... Everyone loves Vikings!
3 Inches of Blood's song Deadly Sinners also works for them. Same reason.

For an Ork Speed Freekz army, I'm thinking Queen's Bicycle Song.

I'd like to see you list any other reason than "Apocalypse Now"...

Well, for starters, because of the name, it'd be hard I think to find another unit in 40k that shares it's name with a song that closely. Other than that, it is an iconic song for airborne cavalry, what do you think of when you hear it or see the name? Hueys flying at at sunrise/sunset (I forget which) to war, carrying their troops. So not just Apocalypse Now, which isn't even one of the reasons, it's just that most of the reasons come from it having been used in said film. But it's a rousing piece of music anyway ;)

for the Imperial Guard: Motorhead - Death or Glory.. I cant think of anything that would even fit better:

to name a few lyrics:
I saw a thousand bombers circling in the sky
I saw the iron treads grind and turn
I saw the hundred-thousand scream burn
universal soldier doomed to fight forever

Personally, I like just about anything off of the 'Children of Dune' sound track. You can apply so many of the pieces on it to the different moods of various WH40K armies easily. Also makes for a very relaxing music choice when painting or modeling.

I'm calling BS on this one.
But, you're right, Apocalypse Now isn't one of the reasons, it IS the reason.

You can't say that its a fitting song because of all this imagery, when every peice of imagery is taken from the same movie, then ignore the movie.

The song to the air cavalty - from the movie
Hueys at sunrise - from the movie

That film isn't immitating life; that scene is original. The movie made something Iconic.
The only only recorded instance in military history where that song is played during battle is by a German Panzer division.
So really, Ride should be played to DKoK armoured company armies!

As for songs that the name matches the unit:
Hydra; by Dir En Grey
The Tempest (Banshee's Cry); by The Agonists
Predator Theme; from the movie Predator
Terminator 2 Theme; from the movie Terminator

I disagree. I've never seen Apocalypse Now but I still think Ride of the Valkyries is a splendid IG theme. You do know the mythology behind the valkyries yes? The valkyries ride around the battle field collecting the bravest and best of the fallen warriors/soldiers to take back to Valhalla? The song has military overtones right from the word go.

To Eldargal:
Yes, I know some of the mythological context.
I'm not saying that Ride isn't great music, and that it doesn't apply to every type of imperial guard army (heck, probably every army in the game).
I'm calling out the use of it solely as the theme for an AirCav based IG; that image is clearly taken right from the movie (even if you're never seen the movie, you know about that scene; similar to, if you've never seen Full Metal Jacket, you've heard "me rove you, rong time!").

O Fortuna would also work just as well (and why is that not a Veitnam war song? probably because it was the theme to the movie Excaliber).

Society has a collective memory and association; Fortunate Son, Bird (is the word), Ride are all going to invoke thoughts of 'Nam, so any army that uses such a theme is going to milk that (whether it meant to or not).
And in this case, the poster didn't use any kind of mythology to back his point, it was all referances to a movie which he claimed didn't influence him.

unlike most, I actually take this subject pretty seriously. Alot of music I make is heavily inspired by or themed around 40k mythology, and over that time iv often found lots of other suitable music as well. If you know where to look, you can find some very awesome stuff - that is if you can avoid all the mainstream rubbish that pollutes music these days.

Necrons have an ENTIRE music genre influenced and inspired by them, its sort of like metal but entirely electronic, heavily polyrythmic in structure with by far the most robotic, daemonic and aggressive vocal style you'll ever hear. Perfectly represents the "Techno-lovecraft" feel of the necrons :

http://www.myspace.com/cyberwarfarerecords
http://www.myspace.com/carnivoreadaption
http://www.myspace.com/tombmeridian
http://www.myspace.com/antiflesh
http://www.myspace.com/exhumedcontraption
http://www.myspace.com/ancientruin

For Imperial Guard, nothing suits them more than MARTIAL MUSIC, a genre of military music that mixes industrial, noise and traditional military sounds together to create a perfectly grimdark kind of sound :

http://www.myspace.com/triariiheadquarters
http://www.myspace.com/KarjalanSissit
http://www.myspace.com/inslaughternativesofficial

For Tyranids, the only suitable band iv heard are VERTICON :

http://www.myspace.com/verticonhivemind

For Space Marines, id strongly recomend the harder forms of electro-industrial - with the cyborg vocals, sci-fi cinematics and war-noise, perfectly sums up the "super soldier" thematics of a Marine :

http://www.myspace.com/dutiescalling
http://www.myspace.com/alliedvision
http://www.myspace.com/frontlineassemblyclassics
http://www.myspace.com/cbcycloneb
http://www.myspace.com/christmeister

For CHAOS I'd recomend Death-Industrial, Noise and Experimental ambient. Its chaotic, noisey, harsh, unlistenable to most ******* and sounds like all the horror and chaos of the Warp :

Whitehouse, Coil, Merzbow, Brighter Death Now, Sutcliffe Jugend ect

So perhaps if you want music that really -does- suit your army, you'll check some of these out and throw out those cheesey metal CD's you likely own if reading this reply.

The Imperial Guard and the Imperium in general's theme is "The Unsung War" from Ace Combat 5. It is the background music for the famed Imperial Guard tribute video and, in general, a brilliant piece (and this is from a lifetime musician, heh).

The Space Marines, personally, I think Manowar's Warriors of the World fits very well...

Many stand against us
but they will never win
We said we would return
and here we are again
to bring them all Destruction
suffering and pain
We are the Hammer of the gods
we are Thunder wind and rain
there you wait in fear
with swords in feeble hands
with dreams to be a King
First - one should be a man
I call them out
and charge them all
with a life that is a lie
and in their final hour
they shall confess before they die

Refrain:
Brothers everywhere
raise your hands into the air
we're warriors, warriors of the World

Like thunder from the sky
sworn to fight and die
we're warriors, warriors of the World

I actually want to get a huge tattoo of the Imperial Aquila with the words "Like Thunder From the Sky, Sworn to Fight and Die" etched across it.

Sadly I also hate Manowar, and only like this one song, mainly because of its thematic relationship to 40k and nothing else.

For the Eldar, I think Stratovarius has a lot of songs that make me think of them...

Well, each to their own, but answer me this, aren't all these songs making us think of an army? Sure, Ride of the Valkyries might not make us think of an army in itself, but Apocalypse Now made that song iconic with the hueys at dawn, so whenever I think of or hear Ride, I think of that scene, and that scene shares so many similarities with Airborne Guard. You may argue that it isn't the song that associates with the army, however I argue that it is, because without the song one wouldn't recall the scene. I don't know if that will make sense, but whether you count the middle step or not, it still makes ME think of airborne guard, and that's what the thread is about, not about whether there are any reasons but the film that it fits.

and LOL @ the aftermath of the apocalypse now debate

i was merely making light of the guys enthusiasm with "so many reasons" when there was really only 2; apocalypse now and the name of the song/valkyrie carrier being the same, i wasnt debating whether the song went with an airborne guard or not because of course it does lol, nothing could be more apt, in fact there was a long running debate before about how many surfboards could be mounted in a valkyrie, that stetson wearing commanders could be built, and Mp3 players could be mounted inside a valkyrie with the headphones hanging down underneath...

I had some downtime and decided to finally listen to some of the links on this post and picked these. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but wow. Those first two really sucked in my book. I hear better garage bands around campus. No melody, just ranting and riffing. Up the scale...gutteral scream...down the scale...gutteral scream...off the scale...gutteral scream.

Now on the other hand, that third one was decent. Good guitar licks, audible lyrics ("glorious"). Not a bad choice. Good call.

I posted a thread like this a little while ago about which song you think best fits each Space Marine (the orginal 18 that is) people had some good ideas you should check it out.

I deffinetly think either instrumental classical or heavy metal is the best route. The idea of electro or pop or rap just doesn't seem to fit the whole feel or a army at war to me, but to each thier own.

Ok so I take back what I said about my spacewolves (valhalla by blind guardian). I was going about this music thing the wrong way, I was thinking metal and whatnot, but I was listening to pandora today and I think the best song for my Space Wolves is Party Hard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuw7tcftAoU) by Andrew WK ("we do what we like and we like what we do"), but really anything by him would work.

We kinda decided that Prince really was Slaneesh and the noise marines play when doves cry (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-196646101143773778#docid=5792204981326161348). Chaos = Heritic Anthem - Slipknot (not the best choice, but suprised it hasn't been mentioned :L)

Chaos Marine Dreadnoughts= Entombment of a Machine - Job For A Cowboy

The Inqusition = I am Hated - Slipknot/ Black Soul Choir - Devildrivers cover of 16 Horsepower
