View Full Version : New Tyranid Army

This is the first couple models for my new Tyranid army. The main thing I have been trying to do is experiment with scenic bases as all my previous armies just have gravel and flock on them (your standard bases). I am constantly working on this army as I am trying to get ready for a tournament in November, so if people like what they see I can always post new stuff as it comes up. Feedback is always welcome :)

Lord willing that I ever get around to building my Tyranid army, I hope mine look even half as awesome as yours :)

I must say you are quite the accomplished painter to say the least. Any tips on painting Dark Eldar? I'm starting up one and have a little over 1000 points in Raiders/Ravagers and Warriors/Archon with Incubi.
I plan on painting them black with red trim instead of yours green. I also thought of shading with purple, not to sure how that would go though. But besides that exactly like yours without the green and red instead.

The way I would do a red version of my Dark Eldar is as follows:

1)Staring out: After priming all your models black take a tank brush (or other huge brush) and go over all your models with somewhat watered down chaos black. I do this with every model I paint because it fills in all the gaps in that the primer might of missed and it ensures you have a good surface to paint on.

2)The Base Coat: The big thing with the main colour's basecoat is to make sure it isnt a solid black. My dark eldar actually have a layer of about 30% hawk turquoise and 70% black. So if you want a good looking red do 30% red gore (there abouts, play with the mixture until you get a black that has a red tinge). If you want an easy dark red then do the red that comes in the foundation paint set (red gore is a darker, nicer, cleaner looking red while mechrite red is far easier to use, but has a pinky, more faded look)

3)Main Highlight: This step you use blood red and just paint the edges. The way this looks best is if you can taper your lines (so thin at the start and end point, while thicker in the middle)

4) Final Highlight: The last step is to use blazing orange only on the highest raised parts of your model.

Regardless of what colour you choose I would definitely go with black weapons and a very light skin tone if you can (for some reason they look really good with sickly skin).

As far as the colour you eventually choose all the steps I listed there will stay the same, just change out the colour you want.

The one thing I wish I did when I made my Dark Eldar army was combine the bodies of the Eldar Guardians with the arms and spikey bits of the Dark Eldar and the heads from some of the dark elf boxes. Someone at my local GW store did this and the army looked surprisingly good :)

Anyways, hope that helps and if you have any other questions feel free to ask

I like what you've done. I want to rebase mine with something along the lines of the dragonforge infected bases. That way it reflects the rapid spread of Tyranid organisms at all levels. They are currently flock and bones and I may just geenstuff in the "infection"..

I have been working quite hard to get this army finished for a small tournament near the end of september. Over the last couple of weeks I have finished off my first Carnifex, 2 Zoanthropes and 16 Termigants. All I have left to do before September 19th is one more Carnifex, 4 Termigants and one more Zoanthrope :)

Outstanding work - Do the scenic bases contribute significantly to the time it takes to do each figure? Your conversions, modeling, and poses are all very clean and quite professional... I like the color balance and the highlighting is top notch. Keep up the good work!

First off let me say thank you very much for the positive feed back. I have been out of the hobby for about 3 years and this is my first new army I have painted in about 5 years, so its good to know that I havent lost it as it were :)

@ Halon: For the most part the scenic bases really dont add THAT much extra time to the building and painting this army. That being said the larger monstrous creature bases and any of the bases that have space marines on it do take a considerable amount of time. The one that took the longest was actually the Tyranid Warrior standing on the dead marine as I painted the marine as if he was his own figure and it took about 2 hours. When all said and done the gaunts take about 2 hours each and models like the Tyranid Warriors take about 4 while the MCs can take between 1-4 days (the Hive Tyrant being 4 days of working on it on and off).

@Duskstorm: Thanks! That is pretty much the main reason for this armies colour scheme. I went through about 6 different test models before I landed on the Purple and Brown (I had red/black and white, which sadly is what my Herridan is lol, and different attempts with blue etc.). I also did a lot of practice with the line work for the bone and carapace with this army. The funny thing is the only brush i use is a #3, which is actually very large (holds way more paint, which means I can paint a lot faster :) )

The next things to be updated are going to be my second Carnifex and another Zoanthrope :)

Ghoulio
09-01-2009, 06:55 PM
@ Ragan: Actually as a general rule I dont use washes or inks unless I am working with metal. Everything on these models is just straight up highlighting. For the green I used Orkhide Green -> Knarloc Green -> Bilious Green as the top highlight.

 Easily the most impressive Tyranid army I've ever seen. That genestealer in the how-to is downright scary.

You get extra kudos for the "defeated Ultramarines" basing scattered throughout the army. :D

Ghoulio
09-02-2009, 08:31 AM
@ CrayolaSmoker: lol, thanks! The reason I have all those ultramarines on the bases is because this is part one of a two part amy set I am making. Once I am done this (which should be in a month and a bit) I am going to start work on the other side, which is going to be an Ultramarines Tyranid hunter army. I have a stupid amount of left over nid bits and already own most of the marines. I also just picked up the Ultramarines Venerable Dreadnought from FW with the Tyranid warrior in the banner, cant wait to paint it :)

Excellent paint on those Nids!

How do you do the "streaks" on the carapace? I've experimented but nothing turns out even remotely like yours... Please don't tell me you do them one by one with a 1/0-brush :o

Ghoulio
09-21-2009, 09:37 AM
Thanks again for all the comments, it is much appreciated.

@ sodcactus: For the non monstrous creatures I do the streaking in 3 stages. First I do a covering of scorched brown making sure to leave some small areas of black in the lowest recesses. Next I use beastial brown and I do a thick streaking on all the carapace following the contours of the model making sure to leave very small gaps in the lighter brown. The last step is to take Tallarn Flesh and do fairly thin streaks. All the models are done with a #3 brush (so very large) to save on time. It takes a fair amount of practice to get it right as I did at least 6 or 7 test models to get it down (and as I do the army the new stuff is looking considerably better then the older stuff, and its taking less and less time). The model that took times ten the longest was my Harridan, as I DID paint it with a #000 brush and it took just over 3 months lol. I also have a tutorial with pictures on how I painted one of my Genestealers ealier in this thread.

I also have a quick update as I have finished a couple more things:

Absolutely stunning work. Really makes me want to play Nids again. I love the highlights on the carapaces. Can you describe how you're getting such crisp highlights? What size brush do you use for that?

Ghoulio
09-28-2009, 08:14 PM
I used a #3 brush for all the models in this army. The way I get the lines to be as crisp as they are is 1 part resting both hands on my table for support and 1 part practice...lots and lots of practice lol. So far I have painted 3 space marine armies, a tau army, a dark eldar army, an eldar army, two tyranid armies, a necron army (NOT metal, painted dark angels green with extreme highlights that match the green plastic rod that goes in their guns) - all armies over 2000pts - a skaven army (my first ever), a dwarf army, 140ish blood bowl figures and about 50 necromunda figures :).

Thanks again for all the postive feedback, and from the looks of things I got back into the Nids at the right time as their new book is only 3 months away! WOOT! NEW NIDS!!!

Sadly no, not independently wealthy. I have just been playing warhammer based games for about 20 years (gah..has it really been that long?). While going through school I also worked at GW to help pay the bills, and when I was working there you could get between 60%-90% off depending on what you ordered. I also sold a good portion of what I painted for pretty good coin to help pay for the next project :) I just really like to paint and model lol

I just finished a couple more models for the biomass that is my nid army. So below I have my freshly painted Lictor (he still has that new lictor smell) and some objective markers. I have to say the objectives were a lot of fun and gave me a chance to tell a bit of a story with my models. It was also a good test ground to see how the flipside of this army would look (ie the Ultramarines).

realy nice work man. Love the objectives and base work you do. Impressive. So you do all the line highlights with a #3 Still?

Ghoulio
10-16-2009, 10:50 AM
@therealjohnny5: Yup, still using the #3s :) . The only exceptions are on character models (ie a lot of the work on the Lictor is actually done with a 000 brush) and on the marines. The reason it works well for me on the majority of the nids is because I am going for a fairly gutsy, textured look for their carapaces, so I dont want the lines too thin. The other thing it helps with is speeding the painting along. This army is taking me long enough as it is, so any short cuts I can find I will take lol

The next unit I am painting up are Tyrant Guard. I looked at the GW models and I have to say I am not a fan of them. I decided instead to challenge myself and build my own!

- I started with the Tyranid Warrior model. I have always like them and with some beefing up I think the would look pretty good.
- I then looked at the current Tyrant Guard models and looked to see where all their extra plating is, then modelled it with green stuff on the Warrior. I also added bits from the carnifex sprue to give it some more bulk and to try and make it stand out from a regular warrior.

So far I am pretty happy with it and I am really looking forward to painting it :) C&C are always welcome!

IMHO, he still looks like a Warrior, or maybe even a Broodlord.

I took these 3rd Edition Models and Warrior-ified them:

With the new codex on the horizon I am starting to get back into painting my nids after a 2 month break. As I dont know for sure how everything is going to change I figured I may as well start painting stuff I know I need more of.

First up it is rumored that Broodlords are going to become Genestealer Brood upgrade characters (ie Vet Sarges) and every Genestealer unit can get one. So, in anticipation of that I painted up my Space Hulk Broodlord (as the figure is about a million times better then the metal one). I left extended carapace off of this guy because it is also rumored that they wont be able to take any sort of armor boosting upgrade. I am also going to leave it off of the stealers for his unit to make it easier to tell the difference between the two squads.

The second thing I have been working on is beefing up my gaunt units. I just finished another 10 Termigants and I have already built another 20 Hormagaunts (although for now I am just going to bring that unit up to 30).

Termigants
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hVZcagPD1ZU/SzJ3wDbI2CI/AAAAAAAAACI/_O5G-mhfMik/s1600-h/Termigaunts(30).JPG

The next thing that I am going to finish (hopefully this week) is beefing up that Hormagaunt unit. After that I will get my second Broodlord a squad. Once the new 'dex comes out then there will be a steady stream of updates for the first half of this year :) CANT WAIT FOR THE MAWLOCH!!

With the New Tyranid codex out tomorrow I decided it was time to paint one of my fav models of the current range, the Death Leaper. From what I have read from the rumors for this guy he is supposed to be the ultimate terror weapon to use against your foe. I really enjoyed painting this guy as there are a lot of little differences between him and the lictor. I have gotten back into full swing painting mode as I have also finished a unit of 8 genestealers and have started on my next 3 Tyranid warriors.

By the middle of this week I will have my first Trygon painted up. Really looking forward to finally getting my hands on this guy. I am also really looking forward to converting up a Tervigon and a Harpy to use in my 2000pts force for a tourney in march, so much new stuff, can't wait :)

After two weeks of solid work I am FINALLY done painting this guy. Overall I am very happy how he turned out. I tried to go all out for his base (hence the destoryed Rhino). I also tried some new shading on him, specifically the brown and a slightly new technique for the purple. For the brown I did some washes and I also added another high lighting layer (so bleached bone into my Tallarn Flesh). Next week I am going to finish 2 more Warriors (bringing my total to 5) and then I am going to finish 10 hormagaunts which bring my total up to 30. After that it will be 4 hive guard (2 units of 2) then the converting starts (A Tyranid Prime and a Tervigon). Cant wait!

wow i love your army, even the bases are exquisite!

i'd love to be able to do the "highlight streaks" on the carapace as you have, but i'm far too chicken lol!

Ghoulio

@TSINI: The streaking on my bugs isnt nearly as hard as it looks. The two main things are practice (you can see a VERY big difference between my first units aka the Hormagaunts and my new stuff aka the Trygon). The other super important thing is to have something to rest your hands on to keep them steady. Whenever I paint I ALWAYS have both hands resting on the table and I move the minature so it is always within my painting hands natural range of motion. That way all the streaks have the same level of consistancy and steady-ness.

Okay, BIG update time. Since I have finished my Trygon I have been super busy getting things done for a huge Tournament at the end of March. I have finished 2 Hive Guard, 2 more warriors to bring my squad up to 5 and I am almost done modelling my harpy. I also have been redoing some of my older models to maket hem legal with the new book (aka my Sniper Fex). So, here is all the new stuff :)

As I mentioned in the post above I have been doing a lot of work on the Harpy. I wanted to make it look as close as possible to the picture in the codex as I could. I had no idea how I was going to do this until I started going through my super old bits bits and I found some pieces to a 3rd Ed Hive Tyrant. I used his head and the end part of his tail. Overall I am fairly happy with how he turned out and I really tried to push myself to use green stuff since I pretty much never do anything with it. I have seen a couple of people use the Trygon as a base for the Harpy, and while it does look good I find it is WAY too big for my taste the Harpy is supposed to be on par with/smaller then a Carnifex/Hive Tyrant. I am happy with it to this point and I should be getting some wings for it soon. Once I do I will post more pics.

I hate you.

This is a similar colour scheme to what I was looking at, except the final result would look like a three year old farted paint onto them compared to yours.

Awesome job, and you are the first person I have seen make a Death Leaper look good (I normally despise that model).

That's the kind of paintjob that really delivers on the field of battle. I'm eager to see the harpy with wings on. Right now it looks quite chubby, but usually extremely oversized wings can fix that.

I have a really big tournament later today and finally completed putting the finishing touches on my army.

The first thing I finished was my second Hive Tyrant. I tried using the new techiques I started on my Trygon and really went to town on this guy. Overall I am very happy with how he turned out and I think I will use him as a Swarmlord once I finish converting the bonesword arms. So, here he is:

Hive Tyrant #2 front:

Hive Tyrant #2 rear:

Next up is a scratch built Mycetic Spore. I sculpted the entire thing out of super sculpy with a wire frame base to help hold its shape. Once I was finished the bulk of the spore and baked it in the oven until it was firm (but not burnt...which has happened to me before lol) I added the last remaining details with greenstuff. So here it is:

I finally got off my butt and painted this guy. I have a tournament coming up in two weeks and after a couple of test games I really wanted to make sure he was in my list. I have to say the Trygon/Mawloc kit is one of the best ones GW makes. I just loved painting this guy. Overall I am really happy how he turned out. I did rush him a little bit (he doesnt have as many layers as my Trygon). Once the tourney is over I am going to go back and tidy him up.

All I have left to paint for the army now is one more Hive Guard, a Tervigon *shudder - gonna be next* and a bunch of Termagants for the Tervy to poop out. Once I get all those things done then you can colour this army complete! (just added up all the points and I am currently sitting at 3500pts before upgrades :) ). Once I finsh all those then I am going to go full bore into painting my Sanguinary Guard, can't wait!

That's a mighty fine Harpy! Well done.

I just hope yours works out for you way better than mine has. I'm about to turn him back into bio-mass and make something else from it.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I knew it was trash even before I built it (game wise). I pretty much just have it for fun games and I really do like the way it looks. My biggest regret (and something I will probably have to change) is I gave it the heavy venom cannons instead of the stranglethorn cannon. At least with the stranglethorn cannon it becomes a potent anti horde unit instead of the "being good at nothing" unit it is now :)

After almost 9 months of putting this guy off and painting everything else under the sun for this army I FINALLY got around to building him. I had many different ideas floating around in my mind and I ended up scrapping most of them and just started building with almost no game plan at all. For some reason I seem to work best when I just have a rough idea and just go where the pieces I am working with at the time take me.

For this guy I used parts from the Carnifex, Trygon and Ravener kits (his cute little rending claw arms in the front). My main goal was to make sure this guy didn't just look like a carnifex with 2 or 3 extra bits added on since that is what about 99% of the Tervigons I have seen in real life look like.

The Main body and half of the lower body including the legs are the Carnifex. The head is made from the standard Carnifex head with the lower jaw cut out and replaced with a Trygon Jaw. I also added the Trygon Mandibles and a fin on the top of her head to make it look as different as I could from the carnifex. For the main body I added the "Spine Bank" carapace on the top to be the "Cluster Spines" gun. I also added the spore cysts on the bottom to simulate where the Termagant eggs come out (and this also really beefs up his body). I like this idea a lot since almost every Tervigon I have seen has 1 or 2 tubes where the termagants come out of, which, if she is making 10-15 Termagants a turn doesnt make much sense to me. The Spore Cyst carapace piece has about 10 openings, which I really like. The lower body is the Carnifex hips which were cut halfway down and I added the Trygon bottom tail (left over from my 1st Mawloc) to give it a more impressive profile. Lastly I sculpted the entire mid section out of Green Stuff and Super Sculpy (the actual egg balls were heated Super Sculpy with green stuff for the detail work).
