I'm shocked I really cant believe the ending of the book it was amazing who would of though that Fulgrim would be possessed by a daemon. I feel bad for him in the end but seriously I'm in shock what a great book that was. By my next question is we know that Fulgrim becomes a daemon prince later on, is the possessed daemon still controlling him or is it the Primarch Fulgrim?

Dude, if that blew your mind...wait until you read Legion. Holy crapballs.

As to Fulgrim... my guess is that, after he lost the inner battle with the Daemon and killed his closest brother, he probably gave up on himself and any semblance of life as an Astartes/human. You really get a sense of his dispair and anguish at when he does fell Ferrus. Sad.

Drax, once you got past the first three books, it doesn't really matter what order you read them in..
Of course, it is handier to read Descent Of Angels then Fallen Angels, but otherwise it's all pretty ok..
As suggested, and I'll also suggest, read Legion, and also Tales Of Heresy.
Legion really is the mindblower of the series so far, worth reading first..;)

Yeah, Fulgrim was one of the best books in the series. I'm pretty sure the Primarch is still locked away in a corner of his mind, forced to watch everything that the demon possessing his body does. I think Fulgrim probably gets it the worst of all the primarchs, at least the rest either died, kept their (mostly) free will, or are in stasis. Fulgrim is subject to eternal torment, and can't even kill himself.

Legion is awesome. Skip a bit, and read that immediately. After I read it, the Alpha Legion went from being a legion I couldn't care less about, to my favorite legion. I cannot recommend it enough.

Also, read Descent of Angels and Fallen Angels in a row, they'll make more sense that way. I just finished Fallen Angels, and enjoyed it, but don't want to put any spoilers in here to ruin it for you. But I really wish that I had read Descent of Angels recently... it had been a year or two, and I had forgotten a lot. Also, it's worth reading Angels of Darkness, since that ties in as well, despite not being in the Horus Heresy series.

Tales of Heresy was cool, and has some really good stories, but also some that are kinda lame. The Space Wolf and Dark Angel stories could probably have been skipped, they were sort of generic.

legion is a must, i kindve skipped some books in the series and i read (in order) horus rising, fulgrim, legion, mechanicus, battle for the abyss and finally flight of the eisenstein...... iwonder what "nemesis" will be about...?

Let me just put my approval in for Mechanicus as well. I thought this book was fascinating, and it was really neat to see the other side of the Imperium coin with the relationships to Mars.

Also, Battle for the Abyss might be one of my favorites so far. The majority of the book is like a really good chase scene in a movie!

Fulgrim and Horus Rising have been the best so far. Descent of Angels was good for about 3/4s of the book, but then...

yea I'm going to skip ahead to legion now i just have to find the book! I just cant help but think that the daemon would have to let go of Fulgrims body after he becomes a daemon prince because then he is stuck in the warp and is actually a daemon at that point either way I felt incredibly bad for him and his fate

 Hope you enjoy it more than I did. I have really loved all the HH Books out so far (I pre-order them from Amazon which is cheaper for me than via BL) but Decent of Angels & Battle for the Abyss are in MHO the worst 2 & I did not even finish Battle ( I think his Space Wolves were modeled on Star Trek Klingons & I liked the Klingons!) but some of it was so far feched. (What about how the SMs are able to sneak up on the Supa Ship in Dock without being picked up on sensors & then the SMs are going to shut the Plasma reactor by blowing the whole thing up???

However I thought Legion was outstanding.;)

Poor Fulgrim :( He did so love the Emperor, the poor boy. Out of all of them I wish he could find redemption. I would forgive him.

As for Legion, I'm so tempted to turn in my Blood Angels colours to throw in with them... so tempted. But having a tabletop army of theirs doesn't seem right, you know? As a representation of their forces, it would only be like 2 squads of marines mixed with all manner of agents and such. Maybe I'll just make up a squad or two and have them randomly appear in my games.

Yes.

I hated that book as much as I hate all of Ben Counters fanfics.

But it did have some redeeming qualities, such as seeing some World Eaters loyalists, and finally a Thousand Son, and the dynamic between so many marines of different legions was actually a real pleasure.

But the story was insignificant and stupid marine porn. :P

If he wanted an action tale he should of taken us to the battle of Calth and blown our minds with actually important events.

I have to admit, Fulgrim annoyed me.

Mainly because the titular character, obviously meant to be a narcissistic arse, was just generally unlikeable. Sure, he was possessed, but then again, I guess thats what you get..

I was mainly angered because my beloved Iron Hands were given scant space in the book, and were then just said to have been butchered.
Not cool.
Especially for a legion of mechano-psycho-marines.
They would, quite frankly, have torn the Emperors Children all new ones. But they'd have probably liked that.

Ferrus Manus being killed in canon as well, now that just raised my blood level. I always held out hope that he was on Mars.

I want to see GW do a Unity-esque crusading series once the Horus Heresy is tapped, giving each legion a chance to shine. Heck, even revisiting some old ground would do. I just want Iron Hands!

Spoken like a true ranting fanboy..:D

A little off-topic, but I've given some thought to this. The current Guard codex could probably work pretty well to represent the Alpha Legion. Firstly, Straken has Marine stats... he can easily fit in as an Alpha Legion marine, surrounded by some trusted advisors and agents.

The rest of the codex can really be used to represent different agents, rebelling PDF's, etc. Conscripts would be great for Cultists (especially when led by a Priest/heretic or 2!), Ogryn could be some form of Daemon, Marbo is clearly a suicide bomber... plenty to work with.

If you want to have some more marines in the list, Tech-priests are pretty close to a marine, stat-wise, and could be modelled as such.

nope, i found it a great book leading up to the battle of calth (i wonder if there is going to be a book)

i always thaought that if fulgrim was switched with a daemon, he must have been trapped in that painting in the end

I think this is what I liked so much about it.

As for the Alpha Legion...man, I'd love to make a LOYAL Alpha Legion squad...you know, pretend Alpharius and Omegon had at it with each other, one believing the pragmatic steps to take in the 40k world would be to stay the present, chaos driven course, whereas the other no longer believes the cabal visions of the future and believes that the world will perish if they do not right the ship and return to the emperor's loyal employ.

how very Dorian Grey of you. it would be entertaining to have that little reference in there due to the EC being a bunch of pretty boys (at least by marine standards)

I will also add to the fact legion is pure literary silk. I have seen tons of loyal AL armies appear as result.

Fulgrim however I didnt like. Not that it isnt good, as it is. But at no point did i feel sorry for Fulgrim, the path of him and his legion was always set on that of total destruction. There is no discernible good or hope in that book, you just watch him fall and fall. I read the book just to see how Corax was portrayed, seeing that Rg fluffs are thin on the ground. It was brief but decent.

Einstein is also a great book with a fantastic ending. Garro should be made into a limited edition mini, hes legendary.

Abyss was dire and I actually haven't read any HH books since, but will be picking back up with prospero burns and a thousand sons. Leman Russ always makes for the promise of a great book.

Levitas (and everyone else who hasn't..), I wholly recommend you grab Tales Of Heresy, if just for Abnett taking on the Custodes, and McNeill doing the utterly sublime and wonderful The Last Church.
Man, just for that story alone is the book worth it..:D

That is too true. Garro is such a beast. He kills that Sob, then he kills his favorite squad member, when he is in a demonic form. A couple thousand years old and he still manage to own everyone.

Legion is probably my favorite book, just crazyness. I really like how you are think you know what is going on and your like "NO WAY that is so awesome he is doing that" but then he is actually doing something else and your just like "NOOOO ******* WAY, what a beast/fool". If you know what I mean.

SOme spoilers ahead for legion look away if u do not want to read

Ok after a day of reading legion I'm really starting to get into it. I'm about half way through the book where Sonika/Bonzi take the Uxor I really like seeing the alpha legion in the view of the geno warriors, it's very different prespective however i feel like everybody is being deceptive or back stabbing someone.

Legion was fantastic, and though it'll never happen, it makes me wish I could see to the end of the 40k universe to finally see I guess the "conclusion" of the Alpha Legion (it was really hard to word that without spoilers, btw!)

OK i just finished legion I HAVE SOME MAJOR MAJOR QUESTIONS I have spoilers ahead so i suggest you skip if you haven't read legion.

The cabal said that they had to avoid the second path IE the version of the universe it's currently set in the 40k game. So did the Alpha legion fail? I also cant believe that there still loyal.... Once again my mind is blown but this time x100

SPOILERS MAY FOLLOW--PLEASE DO NOT READ IF YOU'VE NOT READ LEGION

I know, awesome right?

I think this is one of the things that makes the Alpha Legion so intriguing to me, particularly in the 40k universe as we now see it. For me, I can certainly see a few takes on their present mindset:

1. We have to follow the course that we set out on the first place to save the universe. If this means fighting our brethren, so be it.

2. Holy crap, I think we made the wrong decision. This plan doesn't seem to be coming to fruition at all. Maybe we should take the pragmatic approach and try a different option.

I see both going with their ultra-pragmatic mindset, but I think #1 makes sense in that I believe Alpharius and Omegon are patient enough to let a plan develop over multiple millenia. With that being said, I just love the notion that in the future, Alpharius and Omegon have disagreed, one opting for choice 1 and one option for choice 2 and becoming loyal again.

Who knows.

I know it's crazy that book was amazing, after reading the 5 previous books it was also written very well so you could see drasticly the differences bewteen the Alpha legion and the other Space marine legions. Honestly I want to make my table top salamanders alpha legion now. I just wish i knew more!! and I'm also sorry if this is just a jabbering of words my mind is thinking all over the place right now after reading the book.

The salamander's book is excellent!! To thin its just the beginning of a triology!! Can't wait for the other two. With the Alpha legion and the cabal's approach it also makes you wonder what are they up too? If they wanted to affect the outcome of this rebellion for their benefit? This revelation raises even more questions. Why did they not approach the emperor and reveal their revelations to him. The twins approach to the matter is pragmatic with the information provided to them. Is it as Grammaticus thought the "death sentence for the human race", or is this Chaos twisting the thoughts and actions of others for their benefit?

Salamanders is a great look into the chapter and how these unique marines function on downtime as well as in battle. The rivalry between the two seargents just raises the intenstity level in the book as they each come to terms with the death of their former commander. It gives you a real insight into chapter politics at both chapter and company command level. Also, how far pride and anger can mislead you.Enjoy the book.
