I would like to know what fellow gamers think is the best way to paint tomb kings. I am thinking of starting an army of the undead and should I paint the skeletons with 'gleaming bone and spear tips' like on GW.co.uk or dusty and decayed like I think they should look. I can't decide so can anyone help me?

I prefer the old/ancient and decrepit look. Really easy too - prime white, wash with bleached bone, dry brush on some white highlights if you like, do the metal and cloth, wash with devlan mud, and some rust/decrepitness to the metal if you like, base and done!

I think a base of snakebite leather and a drybrush of bleached bone would look older-it's in how to paint citadel miniatures and looks pretty good. But this is good stuff-thanks:)

Yeah if you want really ancient that is the way to go - replace the bleached bone with snakebite leather or even bestial brown if you want really old bones.

Paint them dark brown and sculpt some rags on them, they will look great and unique.

Hi, probably not the best way but this is the way I do them.Firstly I don't join the two sides until the end.

1. Chaos Black Undercoat
2. Khemri Brown Basecoat
3. Heavy Drybrush of Bleached Bone
4. Wash Devlan Mud into Joints, Neck, Eyes, & Mouth.
5. Highlight the Edges around joints, head and ribs with B. Bone.

Base is just neat GW sand and base edge in Khemri.

For Shields etc. I use the Scab Red (basecoat Scorched Brown, Highlight Blood Red) theme.
They don't look too bad and no they are not smiling, they look fierce :)

Those bones are awesome :D.
Could use a picture of the shields though. I think I prefer them turquoise.
Great bones though:D.

The classic black and bone scheme works wonders with a 'dead' themed base.

I don't play undead, but for skulls etc i do:

skull white
chestnut ink wash
skull white drybrush (heavy)
black ink wash (a little thicker than the chestnut ink)
codex grey highlight
black ink wash, super thin
2x layers of skull white drybrush.

looks fantastic.

There is no BEST way to do it. Though I seem to get alot of compliments on mine, not sure why since it's nothing fancy.

Base coat white, brown INK (not sure if the wash will have the same effect) drybrush with bleached bone. Viola, lot's of bone in 3 easy steps.

This is what it looks like.

Great:)
But now I have to chose between two different different methods that both look equally good:confused:

Yep, thats how I do my boney bits too. Simple, straight forward, effective. I do a little highlight with skull white though.

I find after drybrushing 12 horses, and 12 riders, I'm not really in the mood to highlight... Kill children, maybe.

Army painter do a excellent bone primer, use this as your undercoat and base coat. Then add your addtional colours (weapons, bits of armour etc) then a wash over the top with a spraygun or airbrush. A quick dry brush after if you feel like it.

Our club has an outstanding challenge to paint 2k of tomb kings in a weekend. When the book gets updated I'll let you know how we get on
