I have prepared a cheat sheet for folks to use when placing templates.

http://www.box.net/shared/aizo4utiko

It shows you optimal and centered template locations over the main types of base sizes and configurations. My local gaming group constantly was buggered by parallax issues http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallax when placing templates and trying to identify hits. Now we just compare the cheat sheet to the unit below, and if a hit is rolled, count out the dice without all the bother.

It should be pretty obvious how to use these diagrams, where orange means the center hole is split between multiple models, so for stone throwers, etc. where this occurs, you can randomize per normal rules. For skirmishers, for example, the optimal placement IS centered over the center of a model.

For shots that scatter, this guide can still give you a nice idea of what you should be expecting on an off-center hit. You can still do very well on randomly placed shots, provided you're in the thick of a unit.

An interesting note is that a 5" template centered over a huge 20mm horde is actually only a single guy away from the optimum placement, and you're going to hit that many models pretty much no matter how you move the template around.

Good gaming!
