my army is based around the idea thatthey have been engaged in a ongoing conflict in an industrialised planet and have had to adapt to fighting street by street (ala cities of death) as well as assulting bastions and other fortified positions. for this i have tried to make all all models work on the move.
Demon prince; either mark of khone or doombolt (what ever takes my fancy) 120pts
9x chaos marines 135pts
9x chaos marines 135pts
9xchaos marines 135pts
6xterminators; icon of khorne, 2xpowerfists, 2x combi weapons 240pts
chaos dreadnought; 2xDCCW's, heavy flamer 105pts
chaos dreadnought; 2xDCCW's, heavy flamer 105pts
3xObliterators 225pts
Defiler (brass scorpion); additional DCCW, reaper autocannon 150pts
Defiler; 2x additional DCCW's 150pts
my tactics are normally to use the obliterators to remove any long range anti tank fire power with either las cannon snipe or plasma cannons while my armour advances, dreadnoughts normally popping smoke on the first turn. my marines normally take objective grabbing duties but in kill point matches i usually group them togetherand concentrate fire on a single unit while my battle cannons aim at any highly armoured targets.
i normally engage my dreads in anything which doesnt have a power fist/claw as i'm pretty much guaranteed to win while my terminators tackle any threats that present themselves, i normally deep strike if there is ample room at the begining of the game (if not i deploy them on foot or allow them to come on off my board edge)

im just wondering if i should reduce the numbers of men in my third marine squad to give the others more specialist roles ( i normally fight orks, necrons ,tau, other chaos and occasionally blood angels but i'm planning to start playing outside my friendship group)

Few questions for you with this list:
1) how well is it working for you currently? Are your Dreads behaving, or are you losing several turns of usefulness (and maybe some marines) to berzerk rolls?
2) do you have any other models to exchange for your current ones, or does it need to pretty much work with what's shown here?
3) are you very sold on your fluff, or are you willing to change some things to play better?

couple of suggestions you may find useful:
-Chaos Chosen. Basically the same thing as regular Marines, but an Elites slot, with more weapon options and Infiltrate. Try a 5-man squad w/ Icon of Chaos Glory and a Flamer. That's the same price as your Dreadnought, but can Infiltrate and torch any horde units. Plus, any Deep Strike which lands within 6" of an Icon doesn't scatter.

-Look at the Special Weapons for the Marine squads. Meltaguns are fairly cheap and kill most everything.

-Wings. a relatively inexpensive upgrade to the Daemon Prince, which gives him 6" extra movement per turn, to better pounce on CC-weak units.

-If you do go with Chosen, try some Heavy Flamers and Combi-Flamers in the Terminator squad. DS right in the teeth of the enemy army and watch them do the "burny dance" (thank you, Codex: Orks!). Also, for 10pts more, they can take an Icon of Nurgle, which ups their Toughness.

-Finally, Daemonicly Possessed Vindicator w/ Dozer Blade: for 150 pts, you get a fire magnet which ignores shaken and stunned results and can crunch most anything with its' Demolisher shot

1) phonomenly, i usuall deploy my dreads togetheron a flank and usually only one might not do what i want it to a game as i've geared them up for assault its only those pesky ones but then they still have to damage the dread (which has only happened once) i usually deploy my defilers on the opposite flank and manage to funnel my opponents, not much long range anti tank is deployed by my mates, usually fists, melta bombs and a very rare railgun make an apperance. i kind of use them as a terror tactic most cause they have been known to single handedly wipe out whole, marine, boyz, warriors squads in a single turn

2 +3)i have got alot of models to proxy and am thinking of expanding my army, just building the core around my fluff at the moment

as for chosen, will denfinatly try that out, especially against orks
demon prince; what units would be best to work with it in tandem (have a winged prince but usually got slain as it was all by itself while the rest of the army advanced)
never thought about the vindicator, possibly because a defiler can also kill in close combat, will definatly have to try that against my mates necrons and blood angels
thanks

A Daemon Prince is pretty much stuck on his own, I usually try to sneak mine around a bit until I know I can get the 1 turn pounce. I also run mine with the Mark of Slannesh/Lash combo, and not just for the cheese factor. Going at I6 in melee really saves it from a lot of nastiness. Otherwise, you could put a Lord in Terminator Armor and put him in with the pack; it's a bit more expensive, but he has wound soak until he gets into CC. The Khorne Daemon Weapon is also amazing, if a bit risky. Sometimes it'll kill you, sometimes it'll give you 7-8 extra swings in melee, and isn't that fun?

Dunno if you were looking at one, but skip the Land Raider. Without Power of the Machine Spirit, it does nothing well, except in the sole case of defensive missions.

Glad to hear your Dreads are working well. Mine has only killed my other Chaos Marines, and 1 Weirdboy. I was mainly looking at them as a place to remove models b/c Dreads and Defilers do very similar work, with Defilers being a little better at it.

Good luck!
