Does anyone have some experience with resin casting? I was thinking about casting copies of some shields, but i really didn't want to waste the smooth-on beginners set i was planning on buying. Does anyone with casting knowledge think that someone with zero resin-casting history could pull this off without wasting time/money?

Yes, and no. Yes to the "does anyone have experience" and No to the "can you pull it off without wasting money"

First, It would probably be cheaper for you to just buy them from a bits outlet online like hoard-o-bits on ebay rather than cast your own, unless you need something like a hundred. (http://www.hoardobits.com or http://stores.ebay.com/hoard_*_bits )

Second, if you are actually copying an existing product made by someone else (don't mention anything about who's product right now either) you are breaking IP laws, even if for own use (laws vary by state/country, but the gist is, if you didn't make it, don't cast it). If you have your own master, then go for it.

Third, it took me about 3 years of trial and error before I got good at it to the point where it could be called "professional" but the second or third try I was getting hobbist level quality on what I needed. I was making custom parts for GI joe and star wars figures.

thanks! that helped alot. The parts i would be casting would be strictly for personal use, and the only reason im resorting to casts is because none of the bits retailers I've found carry them, hobbyist level quality of the casts were all i was looking for, so hopefully they turn out ok, because buying an entire kit just for the shields didn't seem like a good use of money, i miss the old GW bits service more and more with each project. :(

Which shields are you looking to get more of?
