Hi all.
I am not very happy with the current 'character driven themed lists' in the codexes.

As it means the same named characters keep cropping up with themed armies.
I was hoping to use a standard overly with current FOCs to get themed armies.

1)I was thinking along the lines of allowing ONE themed Elite OR Fast Attack OR Heavy support unit to be taken as Troops unit.
Called a Common unit for that Regiment-Klan-Chapter- Craftworld etc.

2 ) Then select 2 (or3) 'on theme' Specialist units from the Elite -Fast Attack -Heavy Support which are compulsory chioces.( 1+ selection.)

3 Then class all other non tTrop units as Restricted .(0-1 selection.)

Here is an example for a Goff Klan

Common Nobs Mob.

Specilaised Storm Boys, Deffdreads .

Restricted ALL remaining Elite, Fast Attack and Heavy suport units.

It basicaly trades off takeing one non Troop unit as a Troop , with restricting off theme units to a 0-1 choice.

Do you think this idea is worth taking further?
As it would need lots of input to finalise themed lists for all the current 40k armies.

Far from the worst idea I've seen, and I *definitely* agree with you on the issue of the character-based themes.

Well what do you think to this then?

Pick an HQ unit.

For every HQ unit you select up to 3 Support units.

For every HQ unit you select 2 to 8 Common units.

For every 2 Common units you can select 1 Specialised unit.

For every 2 Specialised unit you can select 1 Restricted unit.

I will let those more experianced than me decide what units should be classified as HQ-Support,Common,Specialised, and restricted.
The units are the same as in current codexes, but change ' rarity' depending on what HQ the player picks...(No special characters, just equiped differntly.Eg Bike mounted, or jump pack equipped.)

I am not sure if it was the idea you didnt like or my poor explanation-example.:)

You misunderstood me, I like it! :D
So, with your system, as an example a Lord Commissar would give more infantry-focused choices, a CCS would be normal, command tanks would give additional tanks...like that? If so, I support this wholeheartedly.

Hi Porty 1119.
Yes thats it.
The type of HQ you pick determines what classification units become.

Eg Foot slogging infantry , Mobile infantry/ Mechanised, Armoured,Airborne / Fast assault,Siege specialised.

All these basic themes are arrived at by picking the relevant HQ unit, and the associated unit classifications on how common to restricted they are in each list.

No special characters, just HQ units for each type of relevant build.(Chapter/Klan/Craftworld/Regiment
etc.)
