View Full Version : Col.Gravis' Hobby Thread

I'm Rob, aka Col.Gravis, 25 from the UK and I'm claiming this little bit of web cyber-estate for a hobby log.

I've been in the hobby since about '98, I started off with a little WFB, but quickly moved onto 40k, mostly because of my main hobby love, the Praetorian Imperial Guard, my army being what I'm probably best known for in places I frequent, for the past coule of years that has also been the focus of my project blog, much of my current army can be found there.

http://colgravis.blogspot.com

My main project at the moment is a squad of Preatorian Ogryns, though as a commission piece rather then as something for myself, something I've not done before. These are the first two who bar their ripper guns are now pretty much finished as far as my part goes, they're based off Ogre Bulls with reasonably extensive green stuff work.

Very cool and very Rorke's Drift. :) Make one John Williams and give him a pick axe. I suppose an ogryn would not need a pick axe like the original John Williams did they could just use their fist lol. You could paint up some ratlings as natal skirmishers. :)

Fantastic greenstuff work. What have you got planned for the Ripper guns?

Col.Gravis
08-01-2009, 07:48 AM
Thanks for all the comments guys :)

Vepr, a pick axe, thats a great idea! I've been scratching my head about the arms, some of them I can get away with swinging at their sides, a couple will be two handed with Lead Belcher arms, that'll be another with a weapon in both hands!

APM, the customer wants Ripper Guns in a Gatling style, I was really unsure how to go about that at first as the Ripper Gun is supposed to be rather tough itself given what the Ogryns are supposed to put it though, so a Gatling Gun mechanism would be a little delicate, I'm settling on something like this though, though with a squared ammo drum on the customers request, it's not exactly clear but the white section is a group of three barrels arranged gatling style so it is half exposed, half covered by the lower casing. I've only got as far as the barrel mockup so far as I'm concentrating on getting the other two Ogryns I'm working on finished (bar weapons) first. Inciently the bit in front of the wrist would be the stock behind the wrist in the model.

Maybe you could take it in a gatling/revolver direction? I know its up to the client, but I can imagine that you could get a good result mixing his gatling idea with a revolver. In my mind the revolver matches up with the historical basis for the Praetorians.

Col.Gravis
08-01-2009, 08:00 AM
It's a nice idea, an not one that crossed my mind so kudos! My only worry would be I'd be creating a bigger limit on poses for the Ogryns, having a weapon in this style (I kinda figured on it being Thompson SMG like) lends well too some two handed poses for variety in the unit while a pistol type weapon lends more too one hand or the other, leveled or low leaving four poses only essentially.

I'll run it by the client though, nice one, thankyou! :)

Hi Gravis, great to see you're still labouring away on all that Praetorian goodness! Can't wait to see how these will turn out and you knows, this may be the beginning of a whole range of commissions ;)

Col.Gravis
08-01-2009, 09:47 AM
Hephesto, thankyou, I am seriosuly considering I might look at that yes :)

Tallarn, I parted company with the project, however the bits which were finished are available from TrooperPX through Bartertown HERE (http://www.bartertown.com/trading/viewtopic.php?f=86&t=87669).

http://www.bcadeptus.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10005/DSC02470a.jpg

Time got the better of me, and I lost heart with the project realising I could do better, one day I'll get a revised version done with better posing options and all the parts something based around my Colonel Ackland conversion, the character who by name appears in BoLS Macharian Crusade pack.

Another quick update, some of my own stuff this time as I've just finished the conversions on some new Sergeants to replace my Lasgun armed one's for the newest codex - yeah I know it's been out a while now but I'm a slow hobbyist at the best of times and I don't have half as much time as I'd like for working on them.

I've done 6 for the time being, for each squad of my two up till now finished Platoons, the other platoons will have to wait until I've got my GT army ready.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v628/colgravis/New%20Praetorian%20Work%20In%20Progress/DCompanySergeantsWIP001.jpg

And then these are my favourite three, they're all fairly simple conversions, some more so then others, but I'd sooner these then just using the stock sergeant models as are - they're my Junior Officers.

This one is based on the Bugler model.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v628/colgravis/New%20Praetorian%20Work%20In%20Progress/DCompanySergeant6WIP002.jpg

This one the stock Sergeant model with Chainsword, the simplist of the lot.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v628/colgravis/New%20Praetorian%20Work%20In%20Progress/DCompanySergeant5WIP002.jpg

And finally this one, probably one the most extensive of these models based on a Lasgun armed model (normally held across the body in the left arm).

My first proper go at sculpting was some Praetorian Roughriders (http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x160/gravisblog/Gravis%20Blog/Praetorians/Finished/Cavalry/Mk2%20Roughriders/Hussars001.jpg), I was pleased with them at first, but never quite happy the arms were too fat amongst other flaws. I then got involved with a project for the now defunct Phoenix Clubs Praetorian Roughrider Project (http://www.bcadeptus.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10005/DSC02470a.jpg) which was later produced by TrooperPX on Bartertown. They were never completed in full though, and were still quite static.

After that I converted up a mounted Roughrider Officer (http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x160/gravisblog/Gravis%20Blog/Praetorians/Finished/Personalities/Colonel%20Ackland/Ackland001.jpg), which lead me to this - a new Roughrider sculpt.

As with the previous two versions (my own and the abortive Phoenix Club set), I'm making use of the WFB Empire Outrider Horses. This time though I'm also making use of the Pith Helmeted Head set which I sculpted for Secret Weapon Miniatures. The Torso just needs a little more detailing, the boots need adding, and the first set of arms still have a fair way to go - the one in the picture is nearly done though. I'm also thinking of turning out a scabbard and holster as accessories to join the Lance components I've already finished.

Right, I've gone a bit further with getting these done now.

The lances went together nicely, just needing the arms and lance tips drilled for the plastic rod of the lance shaft.

Next I did come across a couple of issues. The first is there is a flaw on some models along the mold line where the leg joins the tunic, nothing major and as a little greenstuff filling is ideally needed anyway on component joins, not a huge issue.

The picture also highlights that some filling is required under the legs on some of the horses, not essential, but looks better. The other point I'd raise is that due to slight differences between the saddles on the different horses, I did need to push apart or together the legs a little on some to get them to fit snuggly, the metal does have suffieient give for this.

These points aside, I'm pretty damned pleased with the finished result, now just got to get the rest of the first unit done.

And a preview of the wheels I've commissioned as part of a Gatling Gun & Carriage kit, the reals are being done for me using CAD, the rest I'm building using traditional methods.

And finally a test piece for Life Guard heads, this is a mockup helmet, the final version is at the casters to which I'll be adding the heads.

I love the rough riders, but am very interested in the life guard torsos so will keep an eye out for those when they go on sale. I was going to use WHFB Empire torsos, but would rather wait for yours i think. :)

Unfortunately there was a bit of a disaster with the Heavy Laser Rifle, which means I need to build a new master, so thats going to be delayed, I'm hopeful that I'll get that, and the Life Guard heads done for mid July, but time will tell, hopefully the Gatling Gun will be ready by then as well.

At the moment here are the finished products.

Colonel - absolutely awesome, is it going gaudy command yellow or something sensible? (Or maybe a squat stronghold haha)

Cheers chaps!

Sensible grey in colour, I'm using the same scheme as I did for my other armour, except given how slow a painter I am, and how tight a deadline I'm working too, a good friend of mine has airbrushed the base coat for me, it arrived back with me last night, so now its onto detailing it!
