View Full Version : WARPATH CHALLENGE: Name This ForgeFathers Unit

Bigred
07-26-2011, 11:44 PM
OK kind BoLS readers, Mantic wants unit names for this upcoming unit for Warpath. Here is the details and pics:

Mantic has successfully run it’s naming competition several times before – the vampiric Soul Reaver knights, Abyssal Dwarf Decimators and the Dwarf Ironwatch are all examples of where the community got it right and gave us a brilliant name. Well, we’ve taken our naming competition to the next level with Warpath.

We’ve got a fantastic prize up for grabs in the form of a squad of five resin Forge Father Heavy Troopers. These resin figures are masters of the original sculpts that are being turned into PlasticResin and are absolutely gorgeous… though you will have to wait a little longer to see them!

Currently the Forge Father Heavy Troopers are called Grizzlers, but we think there’s a better name out there, and we think you can give it to us. So, what we want you to do is come up with a load of names for these heavily armoured and heavily armed Forge Father soldiers, and put them down in this thread before the 15th August. We’ll then pick the best, and one of you lucky people will bag yourself the first Forge Father figures!

Let me tell you a tale of mighty heroes from ages near forgotten.

Amongst the ancestors of the Forge Fathers, when black powder was the height of war fare, liveda chosen few individuals with the power to control the elements themselves and wield them as any other would an axe or blunderbuss.

These select few could summon hail storms like no others - ice shards like swords - as strong as steel and just as deadly as their fell, piercing flesh and armour alike.

And they called forth huge blasts of lightning, shocking whole regiments with thuderous bolts of energy from the skies above.

These heroes were known as Stormbringers.

Time, tradition and technology have moved on, and the Strombringers of old are but myths and legends, but in their honour the Forge Fathers train their strongest and finest warriors to wield weapons that emulate the legends of old.

Where once ice shards tore through flesh, it now a hail of explosive rounds ripping through the enemy ranks. And where lightning once blasted now bolts of plasma explode and engulf all in mini super nova.

And so the legend of the Stormbringers lives on, instilling fear in all, many of which know the tales themselves, and keep one eye on the heavens above, waiting for first the signs of thunder and hail to herald their imininent defeat.

So I suggest - Stormbringers

Looking at the rest of the ForgeFathers list, the naming conventions are clearly Norse/Germanic (Hel Valkyr, Jotunn, Surtr, Drakkar, etc).

Following this, perhaps "Garmr" (the blood-soaked hound chained at the entrance to Hel)

Lindargo
07-29-2011, 03:27 AM
Note that 'Iron' could be replaced with any metal or name appropriate to the fluff (story) behind the unit. In addition 'Ogun' could be replaced by the Norse god 'Odin'.

Obsidian Vanguard (Obsidian is the God of Stone, and also a rather cool sounding rock)

Mountain Sunderers (Sunder means 'to split, or separate')

Ogun's Relinquishers/Forsaken/Elite/Champions/Harbringers of Steel (Ogun is the God of Iron)

The Iron Custodians/Wardens/Sentinels/Indomitable

The Fathers Iron Sentries/Fist/Hammers/Sentinels

The Unyielding

The Relinquishers

Hope one catches your eye :) my permission to use and/or change them is given of course.

Apologies if any of these have already been posted (^ ^; )

1) Desolators - (from desolate, desolation)

2) 'Flames/Fists of Volund' - would be my favourite though... Volund was a Norse Blacksmith God, known for his mastery of metalwork and jewellery, and also features in quite a nasty and gory tale of revenge :D sounds quite like something an angry forge father would do to his enemies ;)
