Just how good is this game and realistically what does it take to get into it?

I want a good sized force for tournament sized competition and was wondering what it would cost to gather those forces.

well, we started it here with our local game group during the last weeks. Till now i can say the following:
- Basic rules are simple
- TONS of special rules, sometimes for each weapon; this is the point where we are still getting used to
- we have a great time at the moment, we had our special moments (the mortally wounded Mormaer went on a rampage and killed 200 points in a turn and dying after his last shot), so from this point i can just encourage you to play.

To play you need:
- The rules (you can either buy the rules in a nice book or can them for free on the Infinity homepage)
- some markers (download them on the homepage...)
- some minis
- several D20 (about 5 is more then you need almost anytime)
- measuretape
- LOTS of scenery. This is an important point, because even a meagre pistol has a range of 24 inch. And because of the mechanics of the game (Orders and ARO) you need to block the LoS.

For costs: Well, a starter costs about 30-35€ that is about 150 points. Most games are played about 300 points. If you look on the Infinity homepage, most of their example armys (which don´t seem bad) costs less then 100€.

Hope this helps...

It does thanks. Are you saying the starter boxes are about 150pts? seems pretty good especially to keep things simple and straightforward.

The starter boxes vary, but here is a rough list I pulled from the Infinity forums.

Pan Oceana - 113
Aconticemento Shock Army - 126
Military Orders - 147
Yu Jing - 124
Japanese Sectorial Army - 115
Imperial Secret Service - 178
Ariadna - 121
Caledonian Highlander Army - 127
The is a new Merovingian Starter Pack
Haqqislam - 119
Hassassin - 137
Nomads - 114
Bakunin Jurisdictional - 118
Combined Army - 188
Shasvasti - 153
Aleph - 176

Those in bold are the vanilla starters, if you will, while those under them are the given factions Sectorial starters. These are also using the cheapest wysiwyg options, so you can likely extend the lists with proxies.
A good bit of advice for learning the game is to initially start with a few games using just the basic line troops which teach the ground rules of the game. When you're comfortable with them start adding more advanced troops into your lists which bring more advanced rules.

I honestly think if you could drop about $200 on this game, you would have a decent sized force with about as many options as you would want, with any faction. The starters boxes are a great entry and pretty well balanced. Then round it out with the guys you like best.

Like was mentioned above, the biggest challenge is finding a group of guys who want to try something new... and rounding up a ton of terrain.

It's become one of my favorite games, and I can't say enough good about it.

I have read through the rules, watched the videos, oogled the models and already I am psyched about the game. Even went so far as too pick up terrain, templates, books and ordered some Yu Jing to try out. Thanks the responses!

I'm pretty interested to, but my FLGS doesn't carry it. Any ideas on the best place to order it in from?

I've ordered from ChaosOrc (http://chaosorc.com/sci-fi-miniatures-infinity-corvus-belli-c-353_243.html) and now Sci-Fi Genre (http://www.scifigenre.com/browse.aspx?sid=L1YJV10TS1PK1TH&nSubCategoryID=135&nExpandToID=4985) in the U.S.

As for learning the game IJW created a helpful post on the official forums titled "Intro games and learning to play (http://www.infinitythegame.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=4965)"

I've also compiled hopefully useful information here (http://www.lounge.belloflostsouls.net/showthread.php?t=14854).

I got most of mine from thewarstore.com.
They charge the same shipping regardless of how much you get.

You sir, are a Godsend. Big thank you!:)

Specially love the Infinity for 40k players.

I actually asked my local store if they would order the book and a few models and they were very cool and agreed. All depends on your local store, but worth asking.

Here comes Infinity Week 2012 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9H3F1_qIWQ&feature=youtu.be) over at Beasts of War (http://www.beastsofwar.com/infinity-week-2012/).
After that, the designers are heading to Gen Con for the first time, so for those of you attending, check it out.
Last year during the BoW Infinity Week, Corvus Belli had starter army packs for 50% off. Hopefully it is an annual occurrence.

I like the Caledonians, with their Werewolf troops, snipers, and basic troops. They may not have the gadgets, and hi-tech weaponry of other factions, but they are a lot tougher, and like to close in for the kill most times.

My LGS finally started stocking the rulebooks now that there's a small group of us starting to play there every week or two. We've started to gain a few more people recently so we're hoping that in a month or two, they'll start stocking the models as well.

I think once they do the community will finally take off as currently the closest place that stocks Infinity here is past DC and up by Baltimore (Inkybrushes' store), which can be a hassle with the usual traffic.
