Hi, I'm a 40k/Fantasy player who has a long and deep love of the PC games franchise Homeworld. Homeworld is a highly polished 3D tactical RTS set entirely in space, with full 3D movement etc.

While there are a few interesting things about space combat in 40k, ultimately I'd love to introduce Homeworld to my fellow FLGS gamers (none of us play BFG) in a gaming system they'd be more likely to understand.

To do this, I'd need to be able to detail: fighter combat, carrier engagements, flotilla combat (smaller combat ships that aren't fighters, like patrol boat and cruiser type stuff) , and perhaps something like a "mothership,' a unit that can best represent a sort of deceptively fragile fleet-leading super-ship.

Can BFG games be worked to model this sort of system?

I haven't played BFG much, but I would have to say no, or not very well.

One of the good things about Homeworld is the 3D action. And there is none of that in BFG. I think it would be quite hard to recreate the feel of Homeworld with BFG.

The great thing about BFG is being able to play something that feels like battles between the kind of space ships you get in the 40K universe. It is mostly between large battleships, with smaller ships being much less important. The tiny attack craft are useful, but don't have a lot of character to them (they act more like the special rules of a carrier ship rather than as 'thinking' units themselves). And the escorts are best seen as units rather than as individual ships too.

The other great thing about BFG is the models. (If you like the kind of ships that exist in the 40K setting.) I'm assuming you don't have any Homeworld ship models, so again it will be hard to make your friends feel like they're playing Homeworld.

I agree with the previous post...It would be rough as BFG is very much 2 dimensional. It feels a lot like naval battle on the high seas.

I played Homeworld. I actually stopped because the detail and 3d movement actually made me motion sick....I think BFG might be a perfect stepping stone though. It is a blast and simple enough for you all to pick it up in the first few turns of the first evening...while still allowing for strategic/tactical advances well beyond that first game. I ran a decent league where all of the players were brand new to the game on the first night...it was a blast to watch them develop their own "command styles". And, as Angelic Despot said, the models are very nice and very detailed...all with no motion sickness.
