There has been a LOT of big shifting in ownership of Games Workshop in 2013.

Take a look at this:

As of March 31, 2013 the major shareholders (http://investor.games-workshop.com/shareholder-statistics/) look like this:

Shareholder
Number of shares
Percentage

The Nomad Investment Partnership LP
5,154,141
16.2%

Investec Asset Management Ltd
3,087,765
9.7%

Ruffer LLP (http://www.ruffer.co.uk/)
2,557,260
8.1%

Tom Kirby
2,131,394
6.7%

Phoenix Asset Management Partners Ltd.
1,865,218
5.9%

FIL Limited (https://www.fidelityworldwideinvestment.com/global/default.page)
1,753,900
5.5%

And here's what it looked like in early January 2013:

Shareholder
Number of shares
Percentage

The Nomad Investment Partnership LP
5,800,000
18.7%

Investec Asset Management Ltd
5,700,000
18.3%

Phoenix Asset Management Partners Ltd.
2,900,000
9.3%

Tom Kirby
2,131,394
6.7%

Ruffer LLP (http://www.ruffer.co.uk/)
800,000
2.5%

FIL Limited (https://www.fidelityworldwideinvestment.com/global/default.page)
800,000
2.5%

Some notes:

The largest three institutional investors (Nomad, Investec, Phoenix) begin selling off their GW portfolios within 1 week of the announcement of CEO Mark Wells leaving the company.

FIL and in particular Ruffer begin to purchase GW equity at a large rate. Ruffer bought a large set of shares as recently as March 21, 2013, bringing them above the 8% ownership mark.

Games Workshop equity has been fairly locked up and unchanged for a long time prior to 2013.

Thoughts and ideas?

Company about to skyrocket?
Company about to crater?
Company about to get bought?
Business as usual?

If you think GW is bad now just imagine what it would be like being run by hobbyists !

I shudder to think, but it would be a glorious 3 months...

About the share change, I think the reducition in shares is a conservative market showing how insecure it is. The previous CEO had a proven track record of driving business improvement and returned the business to profit after years of decline. Now that he has left the markets are unsure who will take over and what that would mean for the company. So the marktes sell out until the new person is appointed, and if (s)he has a proven track record then investors will return, if (s)he does not then GW will continue to leak share holders until the market has determined if the new person is good/stable or no.

I make the total shares Bigred published, as 57.7% of total issue in Jan, and 52.1% in Mar. So, where has the remaining 5.6% gone, back to some pot or the minority share holders?

LOL that would rock.

I suggested this 6 months ago. The problems being that random nerds don't know how to run a business!

We don't need to run it as shareholders, we elect an CEO who can run it while managing cuts in prices or sales etc where needed

Good question. A recent GW shareholder notice dated April 2 2013 included this:

As at the date of this announcement the Company had 31,732,213 issued ordinary shares of 5 pence each admitted to trading. Each ordinary share carries the right to one vote in relation to all circumstances at general meetings of the Company. The Company does not hold any ordinary shares in Treasury.

Compared to this Shareholder notice dated January 1 2013:

As at the date of this announcement the Company had 31,729,988 issued ordinary shares of 5 pence each admitted to trading. Each ordinary share carries the right to one vote in relation to all circumstances at general meetings of the Company. The Company does not hold any ordinary shares in Treasury.

...only shareholders with more than about 3% of the issued shares need to be included on official announcements of this sort. So the remaining shares will be held by minority shareholders, along with the other of the 52.1%.

kickstarter would be a really good option in this case.... seeing the amount of cash required to get a hold of a sigificant amount of shares to have a real vote in how the business is ran. but its an nice thought really :P

Obviously GW have grown and expanded from the last 30 years without knowing how to run a business...

I wouldn't be surprised if Disney bought out GW in the next few years.

I know nothing about businessy things. Shares are evil to me - a fake product that doesn't exist in my mind.

However the issue is how many shares 'we'd' need to control it, how much they are (incl brokering), how to set up a shareholding and possibly a website that enables members to vote on issues so the executor/ceo is acting in the will of the shareholders. Figure out a way to get a CEO. Then kickstart for that much. Then hope.

To out right control it you would need to control the majority of shares. Though in practice that isn't alaways necessary, if you can get other shareholders to follow your lead you can do it with a smaller percentage as long as your coalition has the power to outvote any other.
