The pic restrictions can be changed up to a point. Making them too crazy means the forum will bog down and that's not a good thing.

My issues:
1. It doesn't tell me what image types are supported (just that a custom image can be 80x80 or 24.4kb). It choked on my BMP so I had to convert the image to a JPG. More file format options would be good.

2. You should see if there's one of those snazzy plug-ins that let you upload a larger image and crop it to the right size. I think those are pretty sweet.

3. The forum has both an option to upload a "profile picture" image and an "avatar" image. I found that to be a bit confusing, but I figured it out after a couple of tries.

Oh, I went through the registration emails and they look good.

1. Picture formats on a forum will almost NEVER support .bmp. They're not a good file type to be using to begin with because they're too huge. .jpg, .gif, and .png are the available types, I believe.

2. They may be sweet, but honestly, they're more trouble than they're worth.

3. Profiles and avatars are two different aspects. I can remove one or the other, but not gonna until Larry gives me the head's up.

1. Picture formats on a forum will almost NEVER support .bmp. They're not a good file type to be using to begin with because they're too huge. .jpg, .gif, and .png are the available types, I believe.

Does vBulletin give you the option of more image formats? Some forum software only allows JPGs and GIFs, but if more formats are available in the control panel then I say use 'em. There aren't security or space considerations (as long as you keep the max file size unchanged).

Does vBulletin give you a minimum and maximum range for avatar dimentions? If so, I recommend making the minimum 20x20 and the maximum 90x90. You can still keep the file size to 24.5KB -- we'll just have fewer users that have to scale their images (which is a hassle for the average computer user).

2. They may be sweet, but honestly, they're more trouble than they're worth.

It depends on the software. PhpBB doesn't have a decent plug-in for cropping avatar images, but vBulletin might.

3. Profiles and avatars are two different aspects. I can remove one or the other, but not gonna until Larry gives me the head's up.

I've looked at a couple of other forums and noticed the same thing. It was a little confusing to me (especially since the first option was "profile" and I had to look further down the list for "avatar"). I think that will be fine -- we may want to add a "how do I upload an avatar?" as part of a forum FAQ.

Speaking of which, I don't see a place for the forum rules and such stuff. Has anyone written a set of "don't be a prick" guidelines?

Not true on the security issues. I think .jpg, .gif, and .png are plenty. Those are the three main formats that any graphics person will ever use. I know because those are the only three I'll touch. Bitmaps may look good and all, but a png will do the same thing in 1/4 the file size.

The avatar dimensions more than likely do exist, but I don't really see a need to change them at this point.

I _personally_ would prefer to not add a whole bunch of extraneous stuff into the forum. Resizing also has a very nasty tendency to stop working after a certain point.

The guidelines are being worked on, but they are not necessarily a priority at this point. This was to get the forum basics up and running. The content will be done at a later point if I understand correctly.

To address these things in no particular order:

We support
.jpg
.png
.gif
.bmp

When you attach a picture to a post, it will bring up a grid of the allowed file types and thier max dimensinos and filesize. bmp's are purposely clamped down to encourage folks to use the other more effiecient formats, but is still there for that odd poster with a smallish image and no image software.

The posting rules are in the terms and conditions link at the bottom of the forum.

There are thumbnails handled by the system, but they still need some configuration tuning.

Respectfully, I don't agree because the reason I had the problem is because my avatar (used most recently on dakkadakka) didn't work here. Not only was it a BMP, but it was in the 90x90 neighborhood. I actually had to edit the image twice to get it up.

I think we should be be as permissive as possible with these things, regardless of our personal feelings. We want users from other forums to have an easy time coming over here.

Dakkadakka allows for more image formats and a maximum avatar size of 120x120, so I suspect that other dakkadakka users might have the same problem. I haven't checked Warseer, but I think they are using vBulletin too.

In any case, the size of a BMP isn't an issue because there is a maximum image size.

Perhaps not, but we defintely want to cast the widest net possible. If it's an easy change, then it might be worth changing.

I noticed some weirdness with thumbnails when I uploaded a gallery. The 145KB limit on gallery issues was a bit of a hassle too (I had to take my image down to 800x600 or so and compress the crap out of it).

Just upped the size of jpgs to 175K, which is plenty for a decent image of roughly 1024x768.

We're nailing down thumbnail support now. They should be working tomorrow.

I also had a period of slow response and needing to hit the refresh button. Server logs show no spike in traffic or bandwidth, so it must have been a internet connection issue between Austin and the server. It seemed to go away after 5-10 minutes. Wierd.

I don't know what you're referring to, but I found the method to "activate" the Quick Reply box a bit odd -- counter-intuitive, even. Shouldn't the Quick Reply box -- if you choose to have it open -- be active and ready to accept input when you get to it?

Yeah, it makes a little more sense when you are quick-replying to a post that isn't at the bottom of a thread. I had to train myself not to click in that text box. But it has to be like that, so that the proper reply and quote features link up.

I have noticed that other forums with the quick reply have it hidden until one of the icons is clicked. It doesn't look like much trouble with some javascript.

I do think it's amusing. Evony has gone from using a rather appropriate image of a CG knight with something close to "start your fight for freedom now" to a porn actress in a shirt from Wal-Mart that calls potential users her lord... and just her bra clad rack on some sites. It's one of the worst sex sells advertising campaigns I've seen in a good while - has jack to do with what they're selling. At least Calvin Klein's threesome billboards contain/are relevant to the product they're selling.

Also: the character limit on the bio section is redic. Please fix.

Hey Dosadi, I just had a thought: when was that picture of you and Lucas taken?

It was just this past December. It was at the Xanadu Art Gallery in downtown San Francisco. I was only in there because it's one of the few Frank Lloyd Wright designed buildings that are open to the public. I don't think the curator was all that impressed by me fan-boying out over Lucas who I'm sure is one of the few people that can afford to shop there. $25,000 for a Japanese silk shirt?

And I thought 40k was an expensive hobby.

BTW, he was with his girlfriend who was the person who took the picture. I thought she was an assistant, but I later found out she's his main squeeze; Mellody Hobson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellody_Hobson) who according to her wiki is worth almost as much as Lucas.

So I pissed off two Billionairs that day.
