View Full Version : Entertainment in the Imperium

Shamelessly borrowed from a thread on Heresy Online....

Anyway, what do people think Entertainment is like for the average citizen of the Imperium. Outside of Under-Hives, to me it seems that at least some people live a decent middle class life style, have access to relatively modern or slightly futuristic mediums.

Also, has anyone noticed their is very little reference to a dedicated middle class really in 40K. Everyone seems rather poor or extremely rich. Mind, I would imagine their is a middle class on average worlds, but I wonder why their is never really a middle ground in Hive Worlds and Such.

According to the Dark Heresy Inquisitor's Handbook...

"...the average hive-worlder likes their pleasures simple, direct and visceral-taverns, refectories, music halls and cook-shops offer the most commonplace daily escapes, while visits to holo-lantern shows, the carnivora or circus, or the greenery of a sealed arbour dome, are costly and rare excursions."

;) Yep! Iho sticks, Obscura, Flects, & dont forget GROG!. Amasec, Sacra & Beer! not to mention Joygirls.
I remember in many IG Novels the Guardsmen play Dice, Cards & love Porno Slates. (Jurgen always has a few tucked away in some pocket or pouch. :)

As it has always been, some mix of:
Comedies
Tragedies
"Historical" Epics (told from the Imperial POV, for specific effect)
PORN!
booze
drugs

The exact nature of these would be consistant within a star system, but I doubt they would be common between planets in different systems even in the same sector, unless some forms of entertainment move along busy trade routes.

Actually the only one that seems to be universal is the Emperor's Tarot, which is essentially played as a modified version of poker.

well for worlds like Cadia, the populace would entertain themselves by procreating ;) further driving up the recruitment numbers in later years.

i would assume that those who have the money and the time to use television sets (or similar devices) would entertain themselves by watching Imperial TV. AQUILA NEWS! FOX on steroids!

I think they are called Pict-Casters?

I believe one of the most popular PC programmes is Ciaphus Cain--Hero of the Imperium closely followed by Days of Her Life--The complete story of St Celestine. :D

I would assume that it's alot like the most christian parts of the world. They sit around and spend time with their families, play games with their children, entertain guests and go have cookies and tea at the local church.
They probably go to choires and enjoy the simpler things in life, because rest of the time they are most likely working or sleeping the Imperium requires more than 8-5 from their workers.

In the dark future of the Imperium there is only war!

Followed by sports at eleven and the weather with Tim Bailey.

It's presumably there on some worlds, but the overarching aesthetic of the Imperium is the early middle ages, and most stories tend to be written from that perspective. So you'll see reference to merchant and artisan guilds, which are certainly "middle class," and of course on some worlds you'd see freeholding farmers, which would also be "middle class."

The middle class can't play too prominent a role in society without ruining the early middle ages vibe. Consequently, in official material, the middle class doesn't play too prominent a role.

I would assume that entertainment would be simliar to what it was like in the Dark Ages (with the added tech features.)

I would assume that a person would enjoy going to things like witch burnings and events like throwing fruit at people locked in public squares.

Aquila news:
-Today there was war... The Space marines of the rainbow warriors chapter came down and won it single handedly with no casualties, while the PDF dead and wounded numbered in the billions.

- In other news... There was more war which was ended when the Astartes of the First Founding Slamanders Chapter lead by Lord Vulkan burned everything. Lord Vulkan also saved another 300 planets this week which were in different sectors of the galaxy, Thats one fast battle barge Jim!

- In sports... Sister Mary beat lieutenant Marcus in the sector championship arm wreslting match, the late Lt. replied after losing "I can believe I lost to a girl!" he was promptly flamed (literally) by Sister mary. This is the first year that Astartes were not allowed in the tournament because they were "simply awsome"

- This just out today: A recent study shows that female humans cannot be Astartes, EVER.... interesting. And apparently the term "normal adolescent human," does not include females as 'normal.'

- In the weather we have a late afternoon firey convication, expect light acidic rain afterwards. Local authorities suggest wearing nothing less protective than carapace armour. If you do not have carapace armour then the local authorities don't care and suggest you get back to work.

- All habs will still have a full double shift in preperation for the Blood Angels chapters arrival. Any complaints about long work hours will be considered heresy.

HAVE A GREAT DAY! (get back to work)

I'd expect Aquila news to be better than just about any of our various forms of mass media*. Everything news channels do is written for people who don't know what they're talking about, by people who don't what they're talking about.

*Especially if Duke writes it;)

Well the difference between me (Aquila) and the other "news," is that I know mine is bs and I'm under no impression to cover it up, they know theirs is bs and try to cover is up.

I had so much fun writing that "Aquila news" that I'm going to do it regularly on my website!

AQUILA NEWS!!

This just in... We have been following the story of the rainbow warriors and their use of extreme force while "protecting," the PDF. Their extreme actions brought about the death of millions of guardsmen (allegedly). In response to the allogations a representative of the rainbow warriors chapter stated today "well in that case: PDF look remarkably similar to genestealer cultists when your in a rush."

the aribter general has absolved the chapter of any wrongdoing and stated "it's true, they did look a little blue-purple-ish..." he ended the conference by assuring the chapters of the adeptus astartes that their help is always welcome Even if that means a few people have to give thier souls to the emperor (blessed be his name).

I think Gwensdad has it almost perfectly right.

Though the delivery system for those form of entertainment would vary immensly, I would imagine that it would all be the same.

For example. A tragedy might be in the form of a live-action play by torch light in some of the more medeival worlds, where it might be on a pictogram computer in a more advanced world.

The years will roll by, the planet may or may not die, technology might change beyond all recognition but one thing will always remain constant - I don't care what the future holds, as long as it has really big tits........

Well, otherwise what was all that progress for?

Note to strange North American creatures: The Sun - An English newspaper that displays a topless girl every day on page three

Sounds loads better than our newspapers...

On the original subject, I suspect it would be almost entirely dependent on the world you live on. On a low tech world you would have very little in the way organized entertainment beyond the occasional morality play or visit to temple. On the other hand, the Eisenhorn and Ravenor series (and associated short stories) give some clues to what sorts of entertainment are popular on a high tech world; certainly leisure reading and clubs/bars are available, as well as festivals, carnivals, and for the wealthy something like ski vacations (at least on Gudrun...), in addition there have been suggestions that both TV and cinema are alive an well in the 41st millenium (on high tech worlds). Children certainly have access to a whole slew of toys and simple games. Other than that, I suspect that there are plenty of sporting events (the Ciphas Cain HERO OF THE IMPERIUM! series makes several jokes to that effect).

In short, I suspect that a high tech or "average" Imperial has just about the same range of entertainment we do, with the notable exception of things like video games and the internet. The primary difference is the cultural emphasis is not on leisure as it is here (i.e. our society measures work as interludes between our free-time, theirs measure free-time as gaps in work).
