Corvus Belli are releasing a starter set.

Word on the street seems to be that the armies will be Pan-O ( Svalheim sectorial ) and a Nomad force.

I'm gonna be all over this!

This would be very great because i already collect my own svarlaheim-force. I love nisses and orc an i would be very excited if a svarlaheima-sektorial will be released. But i think, the sectorial will come with archeron falls and what we will see here is maybe the generic starter-boxes for pan o and nomads, both a shouting for resculpts. If we get resculpted versions of fusiliers and alguacils i will be very happy!

I'[m assuming the Nomad in the bottom right is a Zero resculpt. Which is weird because Zeros already received a resculpt with the Nomad hacker last year.

That being said, I'm not 100% certain it is a Nomad. There are a ton of differences from the two eye lenses, the waistcoat, chest design, and the fact that he's wielding two pistols which no model in all the Nomad faction can do.

What does everyone think of the Nomad character? Reverand Moira? Special Character? New Reverand unit? It could be new given that the PanO knight is speculated to be a new unit (the unit crest doesn't match an existing Order).

Even though I'm not a PanO fan... the new Fusilier art gives me hope that the goofy beret squad will actually look decent in the near future.

I'm sure it's a Nomad. Maybe not a zero though. Maybe something new? A type of Intruder?
I'm guessing it's a special character unique to the box set right?
I wasn't gonna do Pan-O but if the models look like these...I totally am. I only have a Jotum at the minute and what ever i get in this box.

I think he's something new. Intruders just got a new resculpt, so they aren't likely to be changed so soon, and that guy has a lot of differences that set him apart from intruders - different face, different chest, different weapons.

My guess would be either he's a new zero - unlikely because zeros don't really need any radical changes, just an update, and this guy is pretty different - or he's something entirely new, probably Tunguska-flavored.

Guesswork:

Pan-O: Back to front - Nisse (maybe a male one), two fusilers, a knight of unkown order, Akalis, Orc with multi

Nomads: Alguacil, Zero or Spectre, Reverend Healer, Mobile Brigada, Alguacil, new trooptype for tunguska maybe? look like a new rule too - gunslinger or something

Two generic Starters ... to bad i have a PanO force with a core out of nisses and orcs and a corregidor sektorial

the brigada design is similar to the geckos

Good get on the brigada/gecko similarities.

Personally, I like this set. I mean, I've already got a Corregidor sectorial set, and I'm getting a second one, but this one is mostly Corregidor stuff. Mobile brigada? Alguaciles? I need some of both of those to round out my Corregidor collection. And the fact that there's an awesome Bakunin model in there and an awesome Tunguska model in there is great for me - I'd like to have the models to play both "vanilla" Nomads and expand into both other sectorials (especially Tunguska) eventually.

That should have read, "I'm not 100% certain it is a Zero" and not "I'm not 100% certain it is a Nomad"... my bad.

The Infinity forums bring up something called a Grenzer. Never heard of it but that seems the consensus over there. I'm curious to see the statline, skills, and gear.

If these are at GenCon I'm definitely giving my buddy some money to pick me up one if possible. Or if they do a web sale I'll grab it then.

Funny you mention the Jotum as that is one of the only PanO models I like other than the Hexas and the hospitallar.

I'm really liking the redesigned Spektr and Mobile Brigada. I'm really curious what the other guy is. It's definitely Tunguska as it is very reminiscent of the Interventors (old and new). I wish we could see more of the Alguaciles on the cover.

Also, apparently the Svart PanO guys must be pretty incompetant... how'd the Mobile Brigada just sneak through?

Random Thought: Do you think they'll use different names in their examples ore are we stuck with Fusilier Angus, Zhansi Wen Shu, etc? I don't know what made me wonder that... or why I care.

I play ALEPH and Nomads (Corregidor, will start Tunguska when it's released). Be warned that Ariadna plays very differently from the rest of the factions. They're super low-tech, so they have to rely on some weird tactics. That said, if you want to play sneaky and spam camo markers, Ariadna can be a lot of fun, but definitely not my personal style.

Chronowraith

The good thing about Ariadna is that they rely on different tactics. While it might be a weakness in that in makes the learning curve a little more difficult it's a great strength. You can't hack them, they have climbing plus and camo all over the place, their heavy weapons cost less SWC, and they are mostly immune to E/M attacks.

While they may be low-tech they have access to some of the best ammunition in the game (T2).

They aren't seen very much at competitions outside of spec-ops tournies because they lack hackers and thus it's easy for them to get stuck with a classified they can't complete.

That's the one big drawback I've found with infinity. There are often mission rules that have... unforseen consequences. Inter-faction balance is great, but the general balance is kind of finnicky. Play on a table with even a little too much or too little terrain, or bring the wrong type of specialists to a game, and you're screwed. Luckily N3 is coming up, and hopefully it will address some of those issues.

Kirsten

well I like the look of quite a few of the factions, so I might have to splash out on three or four starter sets. shame they are metal.

are the faction starter sets good places to start?

energongoodie

:D

I personally think the faction starters are great places to start.
What faction do you think you fancy? There are obviously some units better than others but you can play and have fun with any unit in the game whose models you really like so I'd start there.

I bought Yu-jing first just cause I liked the models. Then when I learned the rules and background I went Nomads and Ariadna. The models just sucked me in :)

Kirsten

well keeping an eye on the starter box because the pan oceania appeal, and a rulebook is handy of course, so I would consider Yu Jing and then maybe Ariadna or Haqqislam perhaps

More than happy to help.

I first bought into the game in 2008 with Yu Jing on the appearance of the Hac Tao and Ninjas alone. After playing and learning rules I picked up Nomads as I love hacking and camo. I then picked up Haqqislam for the holoprojectors and impersonation and now I'm working on ALEPH because I have a thing for Greek mythological characters.

I've played against all factions with multiple builds and all of them work fine in either an Annihilation setting or ITS missions.

The game itself can have a steep learning curve but that's primarily due to a mediocre translation into English. Read the rules and then use the wiki and forums to resolve grey areas and you'll be fine.

I hate metal miniatures but I will say that Infinity miniatures work much better in metal than they likely would in plastic. They are very spindly but still retain a lot of detail and I'd be worried about losing some of that detail with plastic (like the plastic Malifaux miniatures).

Regardless, welcome to the sphere. Ask questions if you have them.

Kirsten
07-06-2014, 09:53 AM
well I have the downloaded rules, so I might buy a pair of faction starter forces first, then buy the starter set when that comes out so that I have a physical rule book and two more starter factions essentially.I think Yu Jing, Ariadna, and the two in the starter set would seem like a decent variety. basically the people I play with are happy to play the odd game of something different, but are unlikely to buy in to a new system themselves, so four different little warbands gives enough opportunity for everyone to try something they like hopefully, and I can add odds and ends as I fancy.

Chronowraith
07-06-2014, 11:17 AM
Sounds like my local group. That's why I have three factions. I managed to get one of the guys to buy into the game but the rest are reticent since there isn't a big pool of players in the area. I'm trying to reconcile that by running demos at local stores but it's difficult since none of the stores carry the product.

Kirsten
07-06-2014, 11:21 AM
yeah, I have gotten in to a few other games, but none of my friends have so it never really goes anywhere. I think an Ariadna and Yu Jing Starter set look good though, they seem suitably different and have cool models. what is a good number of dice to have on hand?

DarkLink
07-06-2014, 11:42 AM
You'll never roll more than five dice per person at a time, and that's mostly reserved for link teams, and unlike 40k there's none of this "roll to hit, reroll to hit, roll to wound, reroll to wound, roll saves, reroll saves, roll FNP, etc..." You roll once to succeed your skill check (shoot, dodge, hack, etc), if you hit someone they roll for armor, and that's about it. Sometimes you have to roll a guts check.

The face-to-face system is equally elegant. If you have two guys shooting at each other (or one person shoots and the other tries to dodge, or the like), your rolls become opposed. The active player rolls their full shots, the reactive player rolls their ARO (automatic reaction order) shot. The player with the highest dice wins, but to hit in the first place you need to roll under your skill, so you want to roll high but not too high. So it's possible for a reactive model to outshoot an active one with lucky AROs, but the odds generally aren't in your favor. A lot of the tactics come from stacking the odds in your favor, or from forcing your opponent to expose themselves to multiple AROs at the same time.

Archon
07-06-2014, 12:38 PM

The look of Infinity is definitly the reason why i started it. And yes - it seems they liked appelseed very much - just as i do

And yes i dislike metal too but hey, the minis are very nice and cool when you have assembeld them (gleuing your fingers twice and stop a second before you smash that damī mini to the wall, cause the parts wont fit ) but when its done ... phew ... :)

You should start with few points like a starter box only. Some sectorial starters are not mentioned to stand alone but roundabout 150/200 pts is a good starting point. You could ignore some rules in the beginning because Infinity has a lot of special rules and is it better to get to them step by step.

I started with the starter token set (one for each player) and worked out from there adding tokens as we added rules. Next purchases will likely be camo, then probably irregular/impetuous order tokens, and then by repeaters. After that it's pretty much dependent on what armies you play. Many of the other tokens you may never use unless you play specific factions.

Kirsten
07-24-2014, 11:49 AM
well I bought a camo set, and something else, and the templates. the starter set didn't really seem essential to me with only half a dozen figures each side. from what I can tell, they are all regular troops, and only have one wound each, which would seem to make most of those tokens pointless.

All of the miniatures look awesome. I'm particularly impressed with the Mobile Brigada, Fusilier, and Alguacile resculpts.

The Grenzer and Spektr look pretty awesome as well.

GenCon is in August. The 14th through the 17th. But you are correct, they are on sale at events between now and the end of August (GenCon and I think the big Spanish event going on this weekend). Preorder will be from July 28th to August 31st. Actual release date is late September or early October (that's when preorders ship at least).

will have to put down a preorder in August then, and pick up a few odds and ends in the mean time, like some medics and a TAG...

Just looking at starting infinity,

I want to do a real Valhallan/Corporate type list (no knights) Mate has convinced me to split the starter with him, looks really good for a very modest price.

Looks to be a great value with the cardstock terrain, playing mat, and all the miniatures.

I've always been interested in Infinity -- and I think the new box set will get me into the game. Now I just need to find some DFW area players to join in!

Can I have your knight then? It would go great with my MO lists! :-D

I haven't played infinity since the link troop rule ruined the game in my area, but I'm going to splurge on this starter set. Some of the best minis on the market.

should be putting my preorder down soon, in the mean time I picked up an Ariadna scout, missile launcher kazak, kazak doctor, and tankhunter, along with a yu jing O Yoroi and doctor engineer. should be entertaining.
