Hello Games Workshop!

There has been talk for several months of GW acquiring a professional grade 3d Printer for use in rapid prototyping, for either the main studio, Forgeworld, or both.

With the main studio doing digital design these days, you can imagine the time saving for an outfit like Forgeworld to be able to access the base digital files for GW's plastic range, then being able to build upon them and crank out prototype parts instantly.

I expect that stuff like this will expand to the other major manufacturers in time.

Chances are GW is late to the party. For Kingdom Death, if not all of their stuff starts out as 3D, 99.98% of it does. The same is true for Raging Heroes stuff, who routinely post snapshots of their 3D sculpts. I suspect Dream Forge also 3D prints their masters.

Interestingly enough, everyone (all of us here) could 3D print our own models if we wanted, using a 3D printing service such as Shape Ways (http://www.shapeways.com). I recently installed DAZ3D (freeware) on my PC with the idea of creating my own Sisters of Battle. People are already printing and selling their own models for various games. >>HERE<< (http://www.deviantart.com/art/Shapeways-Batch-419255254) are just a couple examples.
