View Full Version : Sinister Eldar - themed tourney army

Here is the work so far on an Eldar army I am building/painting for Fields of Blood here in New Zealand in September. Its an Iyanden/wraith theme with an original colour scheme.

The army is supposed to represent a sentinel force guarding a webway portal complex on an isolated arctic world. The caretakers are the farseer and his warlock assisstants who tend to the wraith constructs, while a small force of live Eldar rotate service from Iyanden to scout the world and maintain the complex's systems.

Most things made of wraithbone in the army have a dark stoney colour with 'spectral/spooky' imagery moving over its surface for the purpose of terrifying invaders. While the 'live' soldiers clothe themselves in arctic colours to hide themselves from the enemy.

That's some downright jaw-dropping freehand work there. Nice looking army, for sure! I particularly enjoy your Fire Dragons, they aren't as striking as some of your other models but you did a good job of bringing the Aspect colors in line with the theme of your army. I imagine them firing gouts of fiery screaming souls much like the ones adorning the Wraithguard and your Wave Serpent.

Fantastic freehand work!

The only thing worse than staring down the field at wraithguard is when they're staring back! :)

Holy WTFBBQ!!

This army is fantastic

Being an avid eldar collector myself im jealous of this army... Mine is wip, was Saim Hann is now going to be changed to possibly Ulthwe or Yme-Loc... So yeh stripping everything, titans, scorpion, grav tanks etc etc.

Just rebuilding a few units too...

In you army im in love with the fire dragons, their white eyes are amazing. its funny because i was wanting to do something similar to this with dulled down colors for all of my aspects... the white eyes are just amazing

Everything else is jaw dropping as well. Its nice to see someone else totting a 10man wraithguard troop squad. My new army will include this same choice.

Totally nuts, i love this thread its my favorite so far in the Lounge.

Please keep up the great work and give us more pics

I love this army. When I first saw it on WGAU, I cringed at how awesome the freehand is.
The farseer and rangers are great, the white is so clean!

Wicked sick.

But aren't alot of the well painted free hand eldars all Giger inspired

Its why i like them so much. Ive been a massive fan of Giger since i discovered he designed the aliens way back when.

Did you airbrush or freehand these?

Blinking heck man, wish I could paint like that ;)

But till I can I'll just have to admire you army, even if they are xenos :P

I also love the theme, certainly unique, and the arctic theme works nicely with eldar, looking forward to seeing the base of that wave serpent and the dragon motif one :)

Heres the WIP shots of my next Wraithlord, pretty much got the 'head' done and working on the sword. Usually I would finish all the blue carapace freehand sections before moving onto the dark body and sword, but I'm just painting this one in a more of a top to bottom approach.

What did you use for those ice blocks on the jetbike bases?

Just GF9 concrete rubble mix (which is just chunks of resin)painted Ice blue then streaked with white then course sand and a couple layers of snow flock, then dry brushed white.

Ah... Resin chunks... I just wondered what the material was... Whether it was a 'cheap household' thing or a special hobby supply...

Thanks

Those are stunning! I like the pathfinders the most. The tyranid carapace on the wraithlord's head does not do it for me, but besides that, all the models are fantastic! I really like the white scheme and I think you should stick with it for the avengers.

That freehand is ASTOUNDING! i love the theme of this army. I dont like Eldar very much (they are just so damn pathetic) but THESE completely change all that. You sir have gone and done something not many can do... Make the Eldar look MENACING.

Wow, I post a few photos and look at the response :o
Cheers to all of you for the kind words

I will post a complete army shot within the next couple weeks as I have less than 3 weeks for Fields of Blood 2009, here in New Zealand. The army totals at 1749 points and hopefully I can score something for my painting and not lose all my games.

For those interested in the colours used they are the following.
The Dark grey/stone bodies and hulls are a base coat of charadon granite with 2 coats of badab black over the top. The shell/weapons are an astronomicon grey base with asurmen blue wash. The free hand is thinned astronomicon grey layerd up to skull white with touchs of blue wash added where needed.

I have a couple games planned for Sunday using the tournament scenarios so other then work and wife I'm forsaking all distractions to get as much done as possible so I have more time for my objectives.

Back to that last Wraithlord...

These are some of the best "differently painted" Eldar I've ever seen. For that matter, these are some of the best painted Eldar I've seen.

A really great idea for a "different" army, stunningly executed.

Fantastic! Uh oh, running out of adjectives.

and an early WIP shot of my Fire Dragon Wave Serpent

http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/ss307/Lord_Wryth/IMG_7372.jpg

I know the colours are a lot brighter than what I have previously done but its an early shot and I may tone down the flames with washes. It still has runes and spectral faces to be added as well.

The image was inspired by the Broken Trinity/Witchblade mini series from Top Cow comics if anyone was wondering.

Sorry for a lack of updates but I had a deadline to work too and thankfully my work paid off.

The weekend just past was Fields of Blood here in NZ, the premiere 40k event with a handful of Australians making their way over to play as well.

We had 76 40k players all up so a very good turnout.

Here are the finished units previously unseen...

the finished wave serpent who successfully transported the fire dragons about
http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/ss307/Lord_Wryth/wserpent2.jpg

The dire avengers, valued objective grabbers in their wave serpent

My objective markers used throughout the 6 games
http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/ss307/Lord_Wryth/objectives.jpg

and finally a complete army shot
http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/ss307/Lord_Wryth/armyshot.jpg

For the final results of the tourney my army performed remarkably well,

ROUND 1 tabled a plague marine army
ROUND 2 lost to a mech black templar list
ROUND 3 very good game I won against a 2 monolith Necron list
ROUND 4 lost to a mech crimson fist army(the guy came 3rd overall so I dont feel too bad)
ROUND 5 smashed a Dark Angel Deathwing army
ROUND 6 another close win vs mixed Tyranids

I placed 13th out of 76 overall so was very pleased with that but I got what I actually wanted which was...

BEST PRESENTED ARMY '09 :D the harlequin award

Very happy considering there were some very nice armies on show over the two days.

Now I'm throwing around some ideas for a new project even though there will be additions to the Eldar.

So in the meantime I have started on a FW Revenant Titan  stay tuned
