After having considered it for a while and being further inspired by a thread over on MiniWargaming about them, I here present to you my homebrew Iron Warriors supplement. It is a labor of love, due to my appreciation of their fluff and that they are a favorite traitor legion of many friends of mine. As always, please feel free to comment, give constructive criticism, and use this homebrew codex yourself!

”Iron within! Iron without!”
- war cry of the Iron Warriors

Few are the legions that have burned with a smoldering hatred of the Imperium more than the legendary and infamous Iron Warriors. None have prosecuted the Long War further or better, except perhaps for Abaddon himself.

Even at their beginning, the Iron Warriors had an affinity for the logic and mechanics of warfare. Stubborn and determined, few could match them in their dogged methods of war. Having been created with a highly stable gene-seed the Iron Warriors were one of the first legions to be given leave to operate beyond the Sol system. Alongside the 1st and 4th Legions, the Iron Warriors marched into the stars to prosecute the Great Crusade. There among the stars the Iron Warriors earned a reputation for little creativity in their battle tactics and suffered losses that other legions would blanch at to see on their rolls of honor.

Things changed when the legion discovered their lost primarch, Perturabo. The primarch of the Iron Warriors was cold, brutal, and unforgiving – his unforgiving nature only matched by his sheer brilliance. A master artisan and engineering genius, Perturabo was a match for the highest of adepts and magi of the Adeptus Mechanicus. After taking command of his legion, Perturabo reviewed their war record up to that point of the great crusade. What he found did not impress him, instead it merely angered him. No gene-sons of his would disgrace his blood like what had gone before again. In retribution for their mistakes in the past, the entire legion was put through a process of decimation. Drawn by lots, 1 in every 10 legionaries was selected and beaten to death by the bare hands of their 9 fellows. With blood and suffering would Perturabo purify his legion.

With Perturabo in command, the Iron Warriors became the penultimate experts in siege warfare and defensive work construction. Because of this expertise, the legion quickly began being deployed to wars zones that offered little glory or honor besides a ditch, siege works, and another citadel to tear down. They became known as the “workhorse” legion of the Great Crusade. While their brother legion, the Imperial Fists, boasted of their own prowess of fortress construction and tallied their victory laurels, the Iron Warriors were left to grind their teeth in frustration and hatred, simmering deep beneath their taciturn exteriors.

When the Horus Heresy erupted, Perturabo was already reeling from what he believed to be truly unforgivable crimes. Olympia, his homeworld and the command center of his legion, had rebelled against the Imperium. In retribution and anger Perturabo had burned Olympia to the ground, slaughter millions of the population in a vicious orbital bombardment. As the Iron Warriors and their primarch walked upon the scorched earth of their homeworld they felt the unrelenting sting of shame and fear. Other legions had faced censure for less than this…

Before his crimes upon Olympia became known to the wider galaxy, Horus made his bid for rebellion and the opening fight of the wars of the Horus Heresy had begun. Siding with his brother Horus, Perturbo dedicated himself to destroying and tearing down every prideful edifice that had once been built up by his brother Rogal Dorn. The festering anger, resentment, and hatred that had simmered in the deepest heart of all Iron Warriors came bubbling to the surface – a volcanic eruption that would burn strong for ten millennia…

HQ

The Warsmith [250 Points]
Risen unto the glorified ranks of daemon prince upon Hydra Cordatus, this daemon prince still remains true to the tenets of the Iron Warriors and retains all or most of his knowledge and skills when he was of mere mortal flesh.

Siege Savant: This warrior has been tempered in the fire and death of over a thousand sieges and knows how to both take and defend any citadel. The model with this special rule may, after deployment but before the start of turn one, nominate D3 pieces of terrain in the enemy deployment zone; these pieces of terrain have their cover save reduced by 1. The model with this special rule, after deployment but before the start of turn one, may nominate D3 pieces of terrain in his deployment zone; these pieces of terrain have their cover saves increased by 1.

Lessons of Perturabo: As a potter molds clay with his hands, so too did Perturabo mold the minds of his commanders to match his idea of siege warfare. The model with this special rule may add +1 to all penetration rolls against fortifications and adds +1 to all rolls on the Fortification Damage chart.

Mechanical Machination: A warsmith of the Iron Warriors must be as skilled in the arts of engineering a war engine as he is at destroy one. The model with this special rule may, in lieu of a shooting attack, target one enemy vehicle within 12”. If the targeted enemy vehicle is hit, it suffers a single Haywire hit.

Warsmith Honsou – The Half-breed [180 Points]
Known to his more prejudiced brothers as the ‘Half-breed,’ Honsou was born out of the twisted gene-seed practices of the Iron Warriors in modern times: harvesting captured gene-seed to breed replacement legionnaires. This prejudice to his gene-seed has driven Honsou from lowly warrior to master and warsmith of his own Grand Company.

Breach Fighter: All Iron Warriors hold precious the moment when a hole is blasted in an enemy’s walls – for they will pour into the breach assault in exultation, glorifying in close quarters combat. The model or unit with this special rule may fire Overwatch shooting attacks as BS2 and may re-roll all failed armour saves in the first round of close combat.

Master Tactician: This warrior has earned his scars and victories by grinding upwards through the ranks, taking ever lesson ever learned to battle with him into the future. The model with this special rule may, before deployment, nominate D3 units in his army. These nominated units have the Infiltrate special rule.

Arm of the C’tan: Stolen from the Ultramarines sergeant Pasanius, this silver arm has become a priceless tool for Honsou and a constant reminder of his hatred of Uriel Ventris. The Arm of the C’tan counts as a close combat weapon with the following profile:

Range: -
S: +3
AP: 3
Type: Melee, Armourbane, Fleshbane, Enervating*

*Enervating: it is this arm that gives Honsou the Feel No Pain (3+) special rule.

Cadaras Grendel – Champion of the Blood Harvest [160 Points]
Where most Iron Warriors are accustomed to close quarters fighting, few love it more than Cadaras Grendel. Called a ‘butcher’ by most and thought to be well on the path to becoming a Khornate devotee, Grendel still remains sharply intelligent and deathly cunning; he serves the Half-breed only because Honsou has always given him victory.

Range: -
S: +2
AP: 2
Type: Melee, Two-Handed, Daemon Weapon

Warsmith Chengrel – Lord of the Long War [210 Points]
Forced to accept the replacement of his flesh with iron, Chengrel now personifies the creed of the Iron Warriors unlike any other member of the legion. Instead of being placed inside of a normal dreadnought frame, Chengrel chose to be put into a defiler.

Hellforged

Mind Over Metal: By sheer force of will, this individual has retained his wits under the brutal monotony of being within an iron shell for millennia beyond count. This model may perform Overwatch actions with all available weapons except it's battle cannon.

Lord of the Daemonforge: Few understand the creation of a machine and its binding with the daemonic such as this individual. If you take Chengrel as your warlord, then Defilers, Hellbrutes, Forgefiends, and Maulerfiends are Troop choices as well as Heavy Support choices.

Hellforged: Even daemons can be made to work metal with hammer and anvil.[/b] This model's armor is such that an enemy player rolling on the Vehicle Damage Chart against this model may not add any modifiers to the D6 roll and must accept the face value of what is rolled for damage.

Iron Warriors Demi-Squad [150 Points]
It is not always practical to field large numbers of concentrated units, as they may become the targets of concentrated enemy artillery fire.

A unit with this special rule may, once per game, construct a counts-as Aegis Defense Line (no upgrades) in the movement phase. If they choose to do this, the unit cannot move.

Janissary Assault Battalion [80 Points]
For every Iron Warriors Siege Squad, Iron Warriors Demi-Squad, or Iron Warriors Battle Squad, you may take one Janissary Assault Battalion.
Born and bred on worlds dominated by the Iron Warriors, these weakling mortals are nothing but fodder. Their sole purpose in life is to fight and die for the Iron Warriors. No pity. No remorse. No respite. Death is its own reward.
Janissary: WS: 3 BS: 3 S: 3 T: 3 W: 1 I: 3 A: 1 Ld:7 Sv: 5+
Janissary Mamluk: WS: 3 BS: 3 S: 3 T: 3 W: 1 I: 3 A: 1 Ld: 8 Sv: 5+

Just before the orbital firestorm that consumed millions of lives upon old Olympia, there were several grand companies that had made planetfall and began to butcher the citizenry at will. Remnants of these blood thirsty Iron Warriors still remain.

HEAVY SUPPORT

Necessity Is The Father of War: If a player is using this Iron Warriors supplement, they have access to all Land Raider variants – both loyalist and Chaos for the points and options as described in their respective codicies – and count towards Heavy Support choices. However, once taken for use by a player using the Iron Warrior supplement herein, they lose all Special Rules formerly assigned to them and gain Hatred (Imperial Fists) and Lessons of Perturabo special rules. These vehicles may then take upgrade options from the Chaos Space Marine Vehicle Options list.

The player using this supplement also has access to the following Imperial Guard (aka Astra Militarum) artillery tanks and artillery units as described in Imperial Armour Volume One – Second Edition pages 162, 188, and 198. Any and all crew requirements are changed to reading “with Iron Warrior crew; as such these vehicles and artillery pieces also change their Ballistic Skill profile from BS3 to BS4. Each unit, in addition to their weapon-specific special rules, also gain Hatred (Imperial Fists) and Lessons of Perturabo special rules.

Stor-Bezashk Artillery Train: [i]The Stor-Bezashk was a prestigious unit of the Iron Warriors during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy. The brotherhood was made up of the elite siege masters of the Legion and commanded mighty siege weapons even unseen outside of the Adeptus Mechanicus' Ordo Reductor itself. This is an Iron Warriors detachment special rule. If you take an Iron Warriors detachment and purchase one unit that is a Vindicator, Basilisk, Medusa, Griffon, Colossus, Heavy Artillery Carriage Battery, or Field Artillery Battery – you may purchase a 2nd, identical unit that does not take up an FoC slot.

Updated. I changed the wording on several special rules and fixed a problem a buddy of mine pointed out about Chengrel. In light of his change, I may give his points cost a boost -- but we'll see after some more play testing.

My initial thought is that the points seem really low for the Janissary unit. 80 points for an effectively fearless blob of 30 Guardsmen is crazy low. Cultists are TWICE the price equipped with Autoguns.

Otherwise, it looks really really cool. Hard to judge how the Marine rules would work out without playtesting, but it's certainly a fun read and some neat background.

1. the flavor text under warsmith was the same under Chengel.

2. If you're going to use the base states of the obliterators and terminators but add rules you should also consider a point increase. same for basic squads if their equivalent in the codex is the same point cost but you added lessons of perturabo and hatred it might warrant a point increase

If you're going to straight copy terminators and obliterators from the chaos codex but add rules you might want to boost their point cost

Ya I agree. Ws2 bs2 with armor 6+ and fnp for 120 seems way more reasonable

Ok, some things that I find a little wonky:
Fleshbane on a Strength 7 attack is a little redundant; it may make sense fluffwise, but it loses some luster against weaker models. Some naming conventions would be in order; I get that they are a little unimaginative, but having a Named Character with a Title similar to a generic HQ is bound to get old fast taxing Generic Power Weapons makes no sense, especially when you have models with full wargear access in the same unit.

Edited and refined the supplement and put it in a downloadable pdf file.
