So pondering dusting off my Grey Knights for fun, do a little messing around and what not.

7 Grey Knights (Troops) @ 287 Pts
Psycannon (x2);
1 Grey Knight Justicar @ [62] Pts
Targeter [1]
Frag Grenades [1]
Unguents of Warding [10]

7 Grey Knights (Troops) @ 287 Pts
Psycannon (x2);
1 Grey Knight Justicar @ [62] Pts
Targeter [1]
Frag Grenades [1]
Unguents of Warding [10]

1 Grey Knight Dreadnought (Heavy Support) @ 149 Pts
Missile Launcher; TL Lascannon
Searchlight [1]
Smoke Launchers [3]
Extra Armour [5]

1 Land Raider (Heavy Support) @ 264 Pts
Pintle Multi-Melta;

Models in Army: 30
Total Army Cost: 1647

The idea is to have the Inquisitor + retinue to sit back in cover and shoot anything that comes forward in armour. The Grey Knights are doing the same thing. I'm hoping to pop light transport armour before it can make it's way accross the field. The dread is simply there for fire support, I'd also like to try get that into some cover, it'll be situational. The landraider is playing a dual role of fire support and delivery for the termies. Phsykers are going to have a tough time vs this army, all the Gk squads get a 4+ save vs phsycic powers, plus there is a board wide hood. Anything deep striking close to the inquisitor is also going to have a face full of melta.

I'm not expecting to win tournies or anything, but hopefully just have some fun.

Thoughts on the list?

Hmmm...well, it's hard to critique if you are just playing for fun with the Grey Knights. Pretty much, that is all they can do anymore =P.

Hopefully that will change soon, though.

Anyway, if you were wanting to make the list more competitive, I would run a regular Inquisitor Lord rather than Coteaz. He takes a whole lot of points just to give him some very very specific wargear. You can easily deck out an Inquisitor Lord in Terminator Armor and a Psycannon for much cheaper than him, and then use two sages to gain the BS and get a free reroll with the IL.

You are running the Dreadnaught about as good as you can. Also, the Land Raider, I would perhaps change into a Crusader, since the LRC can always fire both Hurricane Bolters AND the Multi-Melta with the Power of the Machine spirit.

Overall it looks like a fun list in a very non-competitive setting. Just be prepared to be wiped off the board by anyone who is playing to win with a 4th Edition + codex. The poor Grey Knights just cost far too much for the low survivability they carry.

Aye, he's expensive, but he allows me 4x multi-melta warriors. I've actually revised the list and dropped him completely and put in a 2nd LR, which I'll probably run as a crusader with the termies in. Free's up a couple points too to maybe stick in a extra psycannon/incinerator termie.

Also, am I understanding that the DH force weapon ignores eternal warrior since it doesn't mention Instant Death?

The biggest grippe I have with GK is the lack of dedicated transports. For a specialist army they are way too static for my tastes. range 36" psycannons just don't dunk enemy transports as good as I would like. The LR and dread can account for a couple of kills a turn, but thats a lot of enemy fire also being directed at a very small army...Maybe another mortis dread could be in order as it would help out a lot in the long range AT dept.

It does indeed

I would go with two Crusaders rather than 1 land raider.
1) a Twin-Linked Assault Cannon is better at popping vehicles than a single twin-linked Lascannon
2) a multi-melta is better at popping vehicles than twin-linked Lascannon
3) You get the 'new' Power of the Machine Spirit (according to the FAQ), which means that while moving you can fire 2 weapons reliably. The Land Raider can only fire two of its 3 hv weapons while moving. The Crusader will be able to fire everything.

Con: You would have to deal with is the short range factor.

What point value are you aiming for?
if it is 1850, you can easily fit in 2 Storm Trooper Squads with Meltaguns in Rhinos (especially if you are exchanging cortez for a land raider). Don't forget you can take combi-meltas (they are expensive, though). Something to think about for your Grand Master, since he doesn't benefit from True Grit. Same with the Storm Trooper Sgts.

Another Approach:
Ditch the Hellfire Dreadnought and Cortez. Take 3 Land Raiders!! (1850 points) Now you have all of your Grey Knights in Transports. Bwahahahahahah! You would have ~150 points to still throw around, too! You could take a cheap-o Inquisitor (no retinue), and take an Assassin. You'll have ~50-75 points to spend on whatever (more guys, wargear for the inquisitor, Death Cult Assassins, ect.)
Personally, I think this last one is the most fun option: 3 Crusaders!

EDIT:
Except for that I totally forgot that Grey Knights have gimpy Assault Cannons. They WOULD have the best Land Raider Crusaders, except for that one thing--- the Godhammer Pattern with Ex Armor might be a better choice.
BTW, you cannot purchase a pintle mounted Multi-Melta for your Land Raider, unless you are using Forgeworld Rules.
