Hey everyone...

It's been a long time since I posted anything here... hopefully that will change.

This is a commission I've finished recently, a Skaven Doomwheel. It was a fun project, although the client was very specific about each and every color choice, so no creative freedom there.
It had another little problem, because he lost one bit (that bit with the skaven symbol on top of the wheel), so I had to remake it. In the end, he is very happy, and that makes me even happier.

Sorry for the poor pic quality. I'll have to find someone with better equipment and setup and photograph this mini properly.

Anyway, hope you like it... comments, questions and critiques are more than welcome (except about pic quality).

Wow, very nicely done.
Masterful work on the lighting effects of the warpstone.

It looks great!

I have a couple of questions for you, however, as I am going to start painting my Skaven horde relatively soon, and would like some advice.

1) What exactly do you do for the tarnished metals? For my 'crons I have used repeated ink washes with black, brown and green and then minimal drybrushing which works pretty well for your standard metallic, but for the bronze which would be for Clan Skryre stuff, what do you use for your basecoats, what do you use to get weathering effects and what do you use for highlights?

2) Since 'crons don't have banners, Skaven are going to be my first attempt at painting them as well. When doing them free handed, do you finish the background first, and then paint the main rune (image) or do you paint it first and then work on the background. Also, what order and what colors did you use to get the 'dirty' banner and runes?

Compliments again on your work!

Hey there, thanks for the nice comments.

There are 3 kinds of metalics on the model (classic metal, brass/bronze and copper; 4 if we count different treatment of the blades), but they're all given more or less the same treatment, with the exception of different colors obviously.
The model is undercoated white, then the metalics were given a coat of Charadon Granite (GW Foundation Paint) that was thinned to a consistency of a regular color. Next step was a heavy drybrush of GW's Tin Bitz.
After that you give it a medium drybrush of your chosen color, in case of the brass/bronze parts it was Vallejo Model Color 70801 Brass. Then I applied a medium GW Devlan Mud wash, followed by another 'dotting' of it around the rivets and in deep recesses.
When it's dry very lightly drybrush Brass color in a motion from up to down only. And finaly mix the Brass with a small amount of GW's Mithril Silver to pick out highlighted areas. 'Less is more' in case of highlighting Skaven contraptions IMO.
I hope this helps. Even though it sound like a long process, it can be completed very quickly when you sort the steps out. ;)

When doing freehand i like to paint all the 'block' painted parts first, and then delve into freehand itself. For this banner I painted the light part first, then the darker parts up to the half and then traced the circle and the triangle pattern in the middle. After that I filled them and corrected any mistakes till I was satisfied with the crispness of lines. And then I finally started painting the runes and other details. Of course, you're bound to make mistakes, so keep both colors nearby to correct them before taking a break or going on the next motif. When it's all over, take a deeeep breath and get ready to destroy your masterpiece with some weathering. :D
These are the colors I used on this banner: Primer was white, as I mentioned earlier, followed by Dheneb Stone Foundation paint. Light part is some Vallejo Game Color (sorry, I can't make out it's name or number, it's ruined) that is almost identical to GW Bleached Bone. Dark part is GW Dark Flesh. And black details is any black, obviously.
Weathering: first, a mix of GW Vermin Brown and a black (3:1 proportion) is stippled on the edges of the banner. Not waiting for it to dry (although it is basically dry anyway), apply a wash of watered-down Devlan Mud, paying particular attention to the folds. Apply another layer if pure Devlan Mud to the folds and position it, so it dries pooling in the shadow area. After that dab some GW Gryphone Seppia wash in random blotches, apply a thinned coat of matt varnish and you're done! :D

Compliments again on your work!

Thank you very much! :)

If you have more questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks for the reply and advice. It will be interesting how they will turn out. The Doomwheel is an awesome looking mini when done well. I'm really interested in what the Hellpit Abomination is going to look like.

Nice job. Hands down, one of my favs. The Flag is gorgeous. The wood really feels real. My two cents would be more mud and/or rust on the wheels to tie it into the muddy base more.

Well done.

Well done. My thought too, but the client wouldn't allow me to rust & muddy it further... Oh, and thank you very much for your comment!

Here are some better pics of it that I promised. Got to snap them today on a pro setup, but without any assistance, so hopefully those photography classes I had in high school paid off... :)

And, as a little bonus, some close-ups I managed to snap.

I hope you like it... as always, comments and criticisms are more than welcome! ;)

Cheers, Miljan

EDIT: For some reason, the pic appear too small. Could be a fixed height setting on BolS... If you'd like, you can check out the better pics in my blog.
