So at a recent tournament, things went a bit screwball and we ended up playing 1v1 750 games (as opposed to random 2v2, which we didn't end up with enough players for).

Here was my third-place list with 1 loss (Major, board wipe) and two victories (Major, both board wipes). Notably, the second board wipe win was against the player who wiped me in round one.

Dark Eldar:

Succubus, Agonizer
Succubus, Agonizer

Wychesx8, Haywire Grenades, Hekatrix, Agonizer
Raider, Nightshields, Aethersails

Wychesx8, Haywire Grenades, Hekatrix, Agonizer
Raider, Nightshields, Aethersails

Razorwing Jetfighter, Nightshields, Flickerfields, Splinter Cannon

As games get smaller, the core focus of your army has to be more and more refined. I chose a list that was 100% built around a vicious alpha-strike against mechanized troops. While the original list was designed to be a compliment to a randomly chosen teammate (we call the format Strange Bedfellows here in Berkeley) you can see where the list principles shine through. The army jumps to a critical area of the board, and then drops enemy armor with vicious glee between the dark lances and the haywire assault--both weapons make big tough transports irrelevant, a huge boon when many armies can't field a reliable response to a Land Raider, Ghost Ark, or Chimera wall at such a low points limit.

Notably, this army would have been a strong contender for the number two spot if I was a better painter, losing by only 3 points after the 2nd place winner doubled my paint score.

Game 1--tyranids
A bad roll means that my wyches fail to charge a key brood of genestealers, leaving them open for the inevitable counter assault and board wipe. A brood of Ymgarls pops out of well-chosen terrain to destroy the Raider heading to my opponent's objective, pinning the Wyches inside on boxcars. The Razorwing and surviving Raider try mightily for the tie, but both are killed by the ravenous swarm. +1S fails to give the units much benefit in combats without the charge.

Game 2--Ultramarines
The Razorwing blasts the Devestators in the backfield down to the sergeant, but there are still more rocket launchers scattered about the table. The Raiders hide carefully behind terrain, focusing firepower onto critical transports and exposing routes to the covered missile launchers. One squad breaks left in their raider and splits off its Succubus, and while he assaults a unit in the far back field the Wyches multiassault the Dev Sergeant and a tactical squad hiding behind a billboard. The Razorwing blasts open one transport and pins the squad inside, and the second Wych unit eats a squad of outflanking Scouts in the wrong place at the wrong time. The raiders drop the other Rhino and spill out the Librarian HQ. On the second to last turn, one Succubus assaults the pinned tactical squad while the other leads the remaining Wyches against the Librarian and his tactical squad. +1 WS proves incredibly useful, boosting my Succubi up to WS9 and forcing unlucky Space Marines to roll hits on a 5, while my Wyches gain numerous extra hits with an improved WS. If there was any doubt, I table my opponent to win the Kill Points scenario and win 8 to 1, losing only the Raider and a few unlucky Wyches.

Game 3--Tyranids, the Rematch
Fresh off scouring the sector of Ultramarines, it's no surprise that my Dark Eldar find yet more Tyranids nearby. But surprisingly, these aren't just any Tyranids, they're the same Tyranids responsible for my earlier defeat. Mindful of the danger, I carefully place objectives for this mission, which is standard Seize Ground and Spearhead deployment. I get first turn and force my opponent into a corner without significant cover for his Tervigon, Ymgarls, Genestealers and Termagaunts and even more critically, AWAY from all the objectives. In response, he reserves everything, recognizing that my ability to concentrate the full wrath of my Razorwing is going to severely harm his armyand that he can walk straight on to the board edge closer to the objectives. I roll Pain Tokens for my combat drugs and immediately start each squad off with 2 for Feel no Pain and Furious Charge. Now I match his toughness and out-initiative him! Carefully positioning my units on my end of the board center, the first units pop up. The Ymgarls chose a great place for intercepting my models on the way out of my table quarter towards the objectives--but I'm well away, on the opposite side of the no mans land, and there is no hope of a charge. My Razorwing unloads ALL ZE MISSILES into the Ymgarls, leaving only 3 alive to threaten. My Wyches hang back, waiting for new threats to emerge near the objectives while their raiders take potshots at the survivors and miss. Turn 3 the Genestealers and Tervigon show up, popo out a few termagaunts, and the Wyches hold their breath and move up to the advancing line of stealers. The assault is remarkably easy with 20 Agonizer attacks and over 40 S4 close combat attacks thinning out the stealers, leaving only a single survivor who fails to do any harm. Though the large termagaunt brood doesn't come in, the Tervigon, Termagaunts, and surviving Ymgarls know they have only one chance and pounce, unleashing a full salvo of shots (wounding both Succubi but killing only a single Wych thanks to FNP) and assaulting both units separately to divide the potential harm. The Tervigon is ultimately dropped by a fatal stab from a perfectly ordinary knife, while the Succubus in the other combat eliminates the surviving Ymgarls with a crack of her Agonizer. The Termagaunts have FNP thanks to the last gasps of the Tervigon, but can't survive the punishment for long--on the next turn, they are eliminated utterly. As the Termagaunts finally come on the board, my Raider moves up in between my Wyches and the only exposed shooting lane within 12", and my opponent (familiar with my list and it's anti-shooting abilities from earlier) makes a fatal error in judgement. Instead of positioning to shoot the covered, FNP troops, he instead attempts to shoot the range-reducing Raider. Pointing out that he doesn't have the range for the raider, and that he's an inch outside of range for shooting my troops, he acknowledges defeat. However, we do roll out the last turn. Both units of Wyches barely make it into CC, annihilating the unit of Termagaunts in a flurry of blows. However, they fail to take into account the immediate aftermath, as without holding an objective they lose a battle modifier despite an otherwise perfect game.

GW Direct/ATO: What does it mean?

OK, so I've read a few things about the new FineCast and in general, complaints about people only able to buy certain GW stuff "direct only," which they take to mean from their site alone.

Simply put, that's not the case (this is for the USA only, not sure how it works in the rest of the world).

Direct Only (Now called ATO, and what that stands for escapes me at moment) is a way, as I see it, for GW to maximize profits on non-core, semi-specialty items that many gamers may not use. Most items that are Direct only will be those that GW may not wish to stock heavily on, so as to not squander resources (metal/resin/space) but will be strong enough movers to keep in production.

By not having to have a ton of these items around for your FLGS to need to stock up on, it saves all around. Excess inventory also means excess in taxes since it's physical property/inventory on hand at tax time.

How does this affect you, if you are someone who likes to buy at your FLGS over purchasing via the internet? In no way at all. You FLGS can still stock them, however the discount isn't as good. They have to be a certain level of GW independent retailer to order them however. A store without a GW account can't get them without paying full retail (this type of store might be getting their GW items through a distributor like Alliance, Georgia Music, E-Figures and the like). A FLGS that can order them has access to the entire range of GW items, but the turn around is a little slower (not that GW is all that fast with how they ship weekly order to all arrive on Friday no matter what part of the country you're in). The Direct items usually take 4 to 7 days in my experience but is well worth the time if you are able to support your local store rather than GW Direct directly.

You don't have to order all the new space marines from GW's site. You don't have to pay huge amounts on shipping if you want a bunch of Strongpoints and Imperial sectors. You can get it shipped directly to your FLGS if you just go in and ask them to talk to their GW Rep about ordering an ATO item. (the discount the store gets and the shipping charges vary based on the level the indy retailer is in GW ordering scheme)

The last item I ordered was a Space Marine Land Raider Crusader sprue (the one with all the cool dodads like Assault Cannon and Melta Gun). Had it within a week, for less than the price of the GW list price (as my FLGS gives a cool 10% discount on EVERYTHING just to thwart those guys who like to say "I can get it cheaper on the internet..." all the time).

Learn to use/abuse the ATO system and keep buying the models you want from the store(s) you like.

Just thought I'd put this out there for those people who keep getting bad info (and as a way to help drum up sales for all those FLGSes out there that need a little shout out now and again).

John M>
Store Manager of his FLGS.

Frontline Gaming and Team Zero Comp will be running Duelcon for Battlefoam this year!

http://www.duelcon.com/

This is going to be an awesome event. Romeo and Co. have given us a free hand to run this event as we see fit, with all of the resources of Battlefoam behind us. That means that this is going to be a great event!

We will be running our standard tournament format events that people have come to know and really enjoy. We will also be running a narrative event, which we will have the rules up for soon.

However, with 6th edition looming on the horizon, these guidelines will most likely change. I will post them for completeness' sake, though.

We hope to see all the regulars and some new faces at Dulecon! This will be a ton of fun, and Arizona is really nice in September. Plenty of sunshine! We anticipate this event will sell out, so be sure to grab those tickets early.

Feel free to shoot me in any questions and I will be happy to answer them.

This event will be a Road to the Open qualifier as well, so be sure to come out and join us for a great weekend of gaming!

Duelcon 40K Missions and Rules

Day 1: Mission 1: Bay Area Open Scenario, Dawn of War

Day 1: Mission 2: Bay Area Open Scenario, Spearhead

Day 1: Mission 3: Bay Area Open Scenario, Pitched Battle

Day 1: Mission 4: Bay Area Open Scenario, Dawn of War

Day 2: Mission 5: Bay Area Open Scenario, Pitched Battle

Day 2: Mission 6: Bay Area Open Scenario, Spearhead

Day 2: Mission 7: Bay Area Open Scenario, Pitched Battle

Bay Area Open Scenario: The Bay Area Open scenario is all three book missions, played simultaneously. There are 2 Capture and Control Objectives on 40mm bases, 3 Seize Ground objectives on 25mm bases, and kill points as victory conditions. Whichever player achieves more victory conditions, wins. In the case of an equal number of victory conditions between players, the game is a tie. Follow all rules for placing objectives as outlined in the book. Seize ground objectives are placed first, before rolling for first turn and deployment as normal. Capture and control objectives must be the standard distance from one another and at least 12″ from a Seize Ground objective. After each game, Victory Conditions will be tallied, and the total amount earned in all games will be used for tie breakers.

Why are we doing this? We believe that the book missions are fun, fair and balanced. However, there are certain armies and match-ups, that when played in certain missions, result in near auto-losses. We hate that. No game should be determined by match-up and mission if at all possible. Only player actions and dice should determine victory in a well designed scenario. These missions also stay as close as possible to the book missions, and do not require much, if any changes to a list that anyone is playing currently.

This scenario allow players to play around bad match-ups by identifying which victory conditions they can win, and which will most likely result in defeat. Smart play will be rewarded and bad match-ups are mitigated. This scenario also allows players to bring a wide variety of armies that don’t have to achieve crushing victories to win.

Will it get boring playing the same mission 7 games in a row? That is a subjective question, but in our experience the answer is no. Each game is different. Different opponent, different deployment, different terrain, etc. Each game will be a unique experience, and playing the same familiar victory conditions repeatedly allows each player to focus on winning the game, rather than figuring out a complex scenario.

Allowed Armies

All, current codexes and White Dwarf armies (currently only Sisters of Battle) will be playable at the BAO 2012. We are NOT allowing Imperial Armor Apocalypse Second Edition units in the event this year, by popular vote.

Rules Judgments

The INAT FAQ (http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/inat_faq.jsp) will be used for this event.

Rules issues will be dealt with swiftly by either one of our roaming judges or by asking the sitting judge handling data entry. We have a clear hierarchy for our rules disputes. All issues will be dealt with in this order, and all judgments are final.

1. GW official rules.
2. GW official FAQs and Erratas.
3. INAT FAQ.
4. Consensus of those judges present at the time of the incident.

Painting

Every army must be painted to a three color minimum. The painting Rubric is available here: If your army is not painted to a three color standard, you are ineligible for any prizes. Paint judging will occur during the lunch break for both days, please leave your army out until you have been paint judged.

Bracketing

We are using Swiss pairings, meaning that players play other players with the same record. Pairings will be randomly determined within those brackets. A tie is worth a half a win, or 0.5 points. Accumulated Victory Conditions will be used for tie breakers.

Comp and Sports

There will be no comp scores at this event. We feel that the game has an inbuilt comp system with the rulebooks and Codexes. We do not feel that a second, player created level of comp is necessary. So bring whatever army you want to play!

Sportsmanship will be handled as a simple thumbs-up, thumbs-down check box on the results sheet.

The temptation to ding someone on sports after a tough loss is often too much for many players to resist. We therefore are providing a very narrowly defined set of terms under which a player may mark their opponent with a thumbs down mark on sportsmanship. This system is intended to punish those who are being abusive, but to not allow chimpmunking. After a great deal of real world use, we have found this system to work very well.

Legitimate reasons to give an opponent a thumbs down on sports:

1. Your opponent was 15 or more minutes late to the round.
2. Your opponent was verbally abusive. This does not mean you argued with your opponent or that your personalities clashed, but that they were verbally abusive and insulting.
3. Your opponent intentionally cheated. Be prepared to support your case to a judge.
4. Your opponent slow played. We define slow playing as not completing 4 game turns of play. In the case of 20 or less minutes left to play, divide the time remaining between players to complete one full GAME turn. Time each other during this period to ensure that each player has an equal amount of time to complete a full game turn. If one player does not finish within their limit, the other player can force them to stop and then begin their turn. This mechanic is in place to ensure no one is slow played out of a turn of play.

What does NOT constitute a thumbs down on sports?

1. You argued over rules with your opponent.
2. Your opponent beat you.
3. You didn’t like your opponent’s army.
4. Your opponent likes Star Trek Voyager. Picard was the best!! NERD RAGE!

A negative mark on sportsmanship will be met with administrative action as follows:

1. First thumbs down: A verbal warning from a judge, up to reversing a win to a loss.
2. Second thumbs down: Reversing a win to a loss, up to disqualification from any prize support.
3. Third thumbs down: disqualification from any prize support, up to expulsion from the event with no refund of the ticket price.
4. Fourth thumbs down: Expulsion from the event with no refund of the ticket price.

Modeling for Advantage

There is a fine line between creative freedom and modeling for advantage. We do not wish to stifle anyone’s creativity, but in the end, this is a game that relies heavily upon the physical characteristics of the models being used.

Modeling for advantage will be handled on a case by case basis. To resolve a possible abusive situation, follow these steps:

1. Ask the player to play the model as if it were a GW standard, modern version.
2. Call a judge to ask for a judgement.
3. Possibly substitute the model with an appropriate replacement.

Examples of what we consider modeling for advantage:

1. Using out of date and inappropriately sized models such as the rogue trader era Eldar Avatar (which currently is a large, monstrous creature model but back then, was the size of a Space Marine, which would now grant huge advantages due to being so much smaller) or Gorka Morka Trukks (which are less than half the size of modern versions). If an army is made predominantly of Rogue Trader era minis (or any era) and is clearly going for a theme, then exceptions will be made. If it appears to a judge that the player is in fact modeling for advantage, then action will be taken.
2. Increasing or decreasing the size of models to gain an advantage in gaining or granting cover. Custom Battle Wagons often fall into this category.
3. Altering a model to increase the range of a model or to benefit your LOS.

WYSIWYG

All models are expected to be WYSIWYG as much as is reasonable. Proxies are not permitted. However, counts as armies are acceptable and encouraged. What’s the difference? That can be a tough call to make in some cases. Judges will determine what is acceptable or not and all judgments are final. If you feel your army is questionable, contact a TO in advance to clear any confusion.
Proxies: Using Necron Warriors as Lootas in an Ork army, etc.

Counts As: Using Ultra Marines colored models with Blood Angels rules. Using custom Adeptus Mechanicus converted models with Daemon rules. The key is that everything is easily identifiable and appropriately equipped.

Terrain

Hills: All hills are open terrain, granting cover via LOS blocking/interference as normal.

Barriers: All barriers grant cover to infantry, bikes, jump infantry, Jet Bikes, and Calvary/Beasts even if they do not actually cover 50% of the model. Vehicles, Walkers, and Monstrous Creatures must be 50% covered as normal to receive a save.

Buildings/ruins: All Buildings or Ruins are area terrain and have as many levels as physically can hold models. Each level is 3” up or down, even if they are disproportionately higher or lower than this. Any building that a model cannot physically be placed inside, is considered a ruin with 1 (or more, depending on the building) levels. It is never considered impassible for the purposes of deepstriking, etc.

Rock Towers, Crates, and Can Towers: Are impassible.

All other terrain functions as outlined in the book.

What to bring.
-Your army.
-A rule book, army book, and game aids such as dice, etc.
-A copy of your list for each opponent (7), judges, and yourself (9 total). You do not have to submit your list before the tournament. You are required to give each opponent a copy of your list before each game.
-5 objective markers. Two of these must be on 40mm bases, the other 3 on 25mm bases.

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone can give me a hand trimming this list down. I need to drop it to 2000 points.

Arc Lector w. Heavy Armor, Shield, Talisman of Endurance, Van Horstmann's Speculum - 178 pts.
Level 4 Wizard Lord w. Lore of Shadow 200 pts.

Captain of the Empire w. Full Plate Armor, Shield, Battle Standard, Talisman of Protection - 109 pts.
Warrior Priest w. Heavy Armor, Shield, Dragon Helm 79 pts.

39 Halberdiers w. musician and standard - 254 pts. (Lector) + 20 Swordsmen detachment - 140 pts.
37 Spearmen w. full command - 215 pts. (Wizard, captain, Priest) + 2*10 Halberdier detachments - 120 pts.

3 Demigryph Knights w. musician and standard - 194 pts.
10 Huntsmen - 80 pts.
5 Pistoliers w. musician - 100 pts.
5 Outriders - 105 pts.
2*Great Cannon - 240 pts.

Total: 2014 pts.

I'm loathe to drop any of the characters' gear, but if you can find a way to make them cheaper and still effective, that's great. I want to keep the great cannons, and have at least 2 good disruption units (hence the pistoliers and huntsmen), but anything else you guys can come up with is fine with me.

All the best,

Hiya guys and gals,

So my mates an I have been discussing starting up a Necromunda campaign as it sounds like a very fun game that is playable for a modest startup fee given that we all have 40k terrain these days.

However one of my mates pointed out that the modern metal gangs are starting to look a bit...dated, and that he would like to look at using some of the GW plastic kits so that we could convert our gangers a bit and also modernize their looks.

after some brainstorming I came up with this basic list of what to use for each gang. Now the Premise is that we wanted to build our starting gangs by only buying a single GW plastics box and relying on our bitz Box's for the rest.

Please note that these pictures are pre-Green stuffing and cleaning up will be occurring.

Van Saar: Van Saar's are known for 3 things, their full body suits, technological superiority and beards.
With that in mind I decided to use the scouts I had lieing around as a base for my Van Saars taking time to gently carve of the aqulia wings on the front, I also elected to maintain most of the scout weaponry as it looks more "modern" than other potential equipment. I also decided that since my other two gangs were going to be Escher and Goliath I wanted a gain that could presumably recruit both males and females to further highlight the singe gender nature of the other gangs.

leader: Chainsword and Plasma pistol

Ganger: Shotgun
Probably One of my favorites for the whole attitude conveyed by the model.

Heavy Stubber
Not sure if you guys have seen this via Beasts of War

Nothing really that new but the inclusion of Belial (rumored) would be cool as well as new Ravenwing and Death wing models.

Via Faeit 212
Chaos Powered Armoured Marines will be included, as well as the new Dreadnought (or renamed dreadnought).

On the Dark Angel side of things, Belial is in there, leading the assumption that on the Dark Angels side there might not be much powered armour. Instead it could very easily be two units of Deathwing Terminators and even some fancy new Ravenwing Jetbikes.

I apologise if this has been covered in another thread.

There was an interesting discussion about feminism here a while back, and while surfing on Jezebel (the only other blog site besides BoLS I frequent), I found an excellent article that made me think of the discussions here:

http://jezebel.com/5798986/what-make...le-action-hero

Imagine a 40K version of someone like Lisbeth Salander. That would be awesome beyond words. The thing would be getting someone like Gina Carano or Ronda Rousey to play her.

As a culture, we basically need a distaff counterpart to Jason Statham - a woman who doesn't do "sensitive" or "romance", but who just kills the baddies in acts of spectacularly pragmatic violence.

As an addendum, there's also this excellent little piece I found by Greg Rucka.

While we're all anticipating 6E, I strongly encourage you to check out Dust Warfare. The Rules were released at Adepticon in April and the game is really fantastic. I've done a relatively comprehensive gameplay first look here:

Dust Warfare First Look

I have to be honest. I really, really like this rule set. Coupled with the fact that you can honestly and truly buy into the game with a competetive army for less than $100 bucks, and I think FFG and Andy Chambers have a winner on their hands.

We're going to do a modelling article or two on the walkers later in the week/month, but I encourage you all to at least give this one a try.

And yes, I know this isn't a 40k article :D None of you scroll down to the other wargames section!

As always, C&C welcomed.

Cheers!
