Attacking buildings

Hey im just wondering how the attacking buildings ability for both imperial fists and the iron warriors legion trait works.
reroll hit rolls against buildings, im fairly new with only 1 and a half years of playing 40k but i do know this is in 7th but never used it.
so how does attacking buildings work exactly?

There are no buildings any more, ruins or fortifications. You cannot attack ruins.
