Using OOP Models in Tournaments?

Dear Sirs and few Ma'ams,

Do your local friendly GW store or other tournament organizers usually allow the use of older out of production GW (Citadel/Iron Claw/Marauder included) models to be used in tournaments?

I have nothing against buying the new stuff, as I pretty much buy every IG model made. But, I have hordes of old original Imperial Guard/Army models that have not seen action outside of my private abode and I'm itching to let them see the light of day.

The lascannons, grenade launchers, plasma guns, thudd guns, sentinels, combi-weapons, lasguns, tarantulas, and flamers (etc...) barely resemble anything used today. Additionally many of the ancient Guard models had been issued autoguns instead of lasguns, even though I believe they had the same stats.

I've mounted everyone on 5th edition legal bases and even gone as far as to write on the front of the base what the weapon is.

Am I wasting my time trying to bring my most beloved despite often poorly sculpted GW models to a tournament because I won't be allowed to play with my toys?

I think you're fine. To my understanding, a GW miniature is a GW miniature no matter when it was made. I've actually been to several tournaments where people used older models. (Including one where I fought a very nicely painted triple Land Raider list, all of which were old style.)

If you're really concerned, talk with the store owner/club manager. I can't imagine they'd really say no...

Well at GW Tournamnets here in the UK the line is:

As long as its a GW/Citadel miniture it's perfectly fine, as long as you tell your opponent what they are if they are not sure what it is.

Chronicle and Marauder were absorbed into Citadel, and Iron Claw was a Citadel subsidiary to begin with. So you should be fine.

I've seen tournament organizers ban older vehicles because of their smaller size and LOS issues with the terrain they have mostly because of Old Ork Trukks (making it a blanket ban to be unbiased). They have never banned Infantry models though.

I've seen abuse of the OOP-Rule in tournaments !
For instance using the smaller older (horrible looking) Demon-Prince and claiming cover, same goes for the old Carnifex...so beware before opening OOP-Rules for each model...

My local GW frequently pesters me to bring in my ancient relics, such as old Land Raiders and Dreads, to mega battles so you should be fine.
The only issue with using squats is that as they are shorter LoS may be a problem for some players who may feel you are getting an advantage.

But if in doubt, as everyone has said, just ask the organiser.

I should hope they wouldn't ban old GW models- they already ban anything non-GW so why put even more restrictions on what you can and cannot buy (ok, they're not ACTUALLY telling you what you can and cannot buy, but if you want to attend these things, you agree to limit yourself in terms of what you can bring). If GW made, GW made it.

I've never had any real issues using my old OOP Rhinos and Land Raiders in store tournaments- just given grief by the redshirt telling me to buy the new stuff :-|

I've never had a problem using old models. Usually the only reaction is "Oh cool! I haven't seen that model in ages."

Smaller or larger models come with a set of advantages and disadvantages, and they usually balance out. My old razorback is smaller, which means it's easier to get cover. It's also lower to the ground, which means it's harder for me to trace LoS from my lascannon and my opponent is more likely to get a cover save. The smaller footprint means that it's easier to surround with enemy models to destroy the guys inside, and there is less leeway for disembarking models. I usually consider it a wash.

I'd rather face off against OOP models than proxies.

Most of my Guard and Marines and....let's face it almost ALL of my stuff is older and OOP. Only played local but haven't had a problem with any players.

I have 4 of the old Ork trukks. A few people now and then roll their eyes when trying to get LOS but never had any issues. I simply do not like the new trukks, plus I can't see why I should be forced to spend $120 when I already have 100% unaltered GW models. Plus they are a whole heck of a lot easier to transport.

I much prefer the older/OOP minis ... I know that theres a lot more scope with the new "plastic multi part" minis ... but theres only so many combo of putting them together before you end up with look-alikes on opposing sides... Im a fan of the visual appeal of the old stuff... also makes for a more "fluffier" pre heresy army :P

Perhaps, but pre-heresy armies tend to be kinda silly facing off against my Sisters (not that I mind roasting a few pre-heresy Marines alive or anything), given the timeframe difference >.>

I agree with Melissia on the OOP over Proxies any day. I've only ever seen GW rule enforced at a GW store. Most LGS that I've played in have allowed non-GW to be used even for tournaments, as long as it fit the fluff/style of the army list being used (I use IKore in my IG as conscripts currently). Now in a GW hosted event, I wouldn't expect to be allowed. Having been a store owner/organizer/judge in the past, there is no real "fine line" but it's mostly about intent and style, and how well you hide what is not GW. I run a lot of old stuff in my BA army, including some RT vets and some 1st edition plastic marines. A marine is a marine is a marine....

Every model ever made by GW is perfectly "legal" when playing 40k.

Of course, though, I must add the obligatory "Contact your tourney organizer for details before attending".

As far as I recall, all the Rulebook says is that they must be Citadel miniatures.

This is why I use old Judge Dredd bikes on some of my guys.

That shouldn't be an issue. In fact I love armies with lots and lots of OOP minis and would be super stoked to face it at a tourny.

A spectator watching my Chaos marines bash into Tau at last years UK GT pointed out that some of my OOP Legionnaires were older than my opponent... This was in Warhammer world so would hope you would never have any problem in any GW establishment, excluding TLOS where anything is smaller - I got away with old school rhinos but old LR may be a bit over much.

I catch ALOT of heat using my old Ork Trukks...which i can kind of understand..i bought 2 of the new trukks and there is a HUGE difference in size. But a Friend of mine has a HUGE deathwing army all of the old metal termies, on the smaller bases, he catches heat too but whats he supposed to do? spend another 1200$ to build the same army he already has?

I'm not talking tournements either, we catch heat in regular games.

couldnt he just grab the termy bases and not have to spend another 1200? :D
perhaps even magnetize them to the bases so he can swap between classic termy and new termy?

Shame on those who belittle the old deathwing, I would love to see one of those armies :D

Yeah, he can just rebase those termies. It's a pain, but at least he doesn't have to buy new models.

The rulebook says that you must use the bases supplied with the citadel miniature. The small bases on old Termies are fine.

House-rules, non-RAW tournies, and fandex-types might want you to use medium bases, but the rulebook says otherwise.

The old Ork Trukks are one of the only OOP models that has a significant advantages. Things like the OOP rhinos (Which I use exclusively for my marines) are close enough, but the Trukks are simply tiny compared to the new ones. That said, the current model is ridiculously huge.

My IG are mostly OOP metals, mostly Praetorians with a few tallarn and Catachan auxilleries tossed in. My Eldar are all 2nd edition metals picked up for next to nothing. In short, I love OOP models!
