When a challenge is issued and accepted, do the two characters fight until one is killed or do they rejoin their unit after 1 round of fighting?

I have only played 3 games so far, but in each game my opponent has counted "outnumbered" when calculating combat resolution. I cannot find this in the rule book so could someone explain it to me...

I know that wizards can cast spells even when in combat (except magic missiles) but can warrior priests pray when in combat?
