US Army veteran; active duty before/after GW1 and PMC duty during "GW2".
I play more historicals now than anything; pretty much 99% of the time now actually.
Currently we play various rules for:

I like FOW but it is a bit abstract for 1:1 miniatures or 28mm. Look at something like Battleground instead.
The guys I play with field Italians, Hungarians, etc... quite a bit. Definitely look at North Afrika book or the new Eastern Front book.
I think the starter sets are just to get your feet wet and develop a taste for the game. Your money would better spent purchasing the full rule book along with a specific book for where/when/what...
