I reckon if you're going for source lighting on those rocks, you need to highlight up a bit brighter and probably avoid the glossy effect as currently this makes it look more like some oily oozy...

I do find defenders useful. With the most cost effective wepaon- the scatter laser, a min-sized squad makes a cheap, objective holding, fire support unit that is reasonably resilient to enemy fire...
