I am a big fan of all marines being consistent. People always complain about "more marines" well, if they are gonna then all of em better have the neat toys.

on your hardboard you can get some natural clay (not plastilina/plasticine as that is impregnated with oil and never dries) and smear it on and layer it till you get the desired effect.

I age my guard tanks by washing with my dirty brush water, works better than you think.
Edit: Oh I see, you meant the Marine himself, not the armor/tanks/company.
you might try simply adding...
A catapult, from fantasy. lobing piles of flaming skulls counting as ordnance with no cover saves.
On my guard I like to paint a small stripe of different colors on the helmet.
for beserkers maybe you could do something different with thier weapons.
