Oh, you guys suck!

I'm gonna go buy some planes today. No one better stand between me and the Albatross's for their own safety.

Also, that Barrage Balloon mini is kind of awesome in its own right...

You wont be disappointed. They even got the fact that the planes of the period turn tighter to the right due to the rotary engines spinning that way. The Balloon is great fun and really makes the game fun, you'll spend lots of time sweating collisions with it . The DR1 is sick! Not the strongest plane in the game damage wise but damn you can throw it about the sky.

OK some basics. There are so many rule boxed sets, and then the prepainted planes on top.

So what sets exactly do you buy to get started, and is the game designed for large numbers of players, or just 2-3 planes per player?

You need the basic game box, which is just called "Wings of War", anything with "Wings of War, Blah, Blah Blah" is an expansion, worry about those later. You need some planes, make sure you get ones from the same period, and thats your lot.

The game can have as many players as you want with as many planes as you want, but to begin with I'd just have one per player.

In a typical game at my club we will have a two seater with 2 escorts vs 2-3 fighters. An objective is placed on the table and the two seater has to fly directly over it to win (bombs or photos, your choice). The other guys have to shoot down the 2 seater. Sometimes this can last a long time, sometimes the 2 seater gets blown up the first time it gets shot at! So we change sides and start again.

I seem to be the only one who doesn't like it.

For WWI ACM gaming I still prefer Yaquinto's WINGS over anything else out there so I shouldn't be too surprised that I didn't like Wings of War. To my mind overpriced pre-painted a/c that no one seems to carry a decent selection of does not a good game make. Both are guessing games and generally ignore the OOD loop, but at least WINGS has a bazillion a/c to choose from and you don't have to hunt to hell and gone (nor sell your home) to find that 3rd or 4th SPAD.

Someday there will be a decent set of initiative/positional advantage WWI air rules with a solid flight model. But till then I'll stick with WINGS.

I got started with "wargaming" with Dawn Patrol from TSR way back in 1984.

So half the allure of Wings of War is the prepainted minis. Heck if I really wanted to, I could just use them in that old venerable game to dress it up a bit.

Mmmmmm, 2010, Internet, Ebay, Any plane is only a mouse click away...........

My friend got fairly lucky it has to be said, most of his collection came from two different bring and buy purchases where the sellers had collected 20 odd aircraft and sold them for peanuts. Our local independent shop sells them and he has a good stock, I haven't got any myself as there was no point as my friend has the whole range with plenty of duplicates. The only thing it lacks for me is I would like to see some seaplanes.

We have played the WW2 version as well and although its not bad, its not as good as WW1. I might get more interested when the model's get a bit more varied.

Larry: I was always a Blue Max person myself.....

Right. Mr A you're a bugger. I have asked for this for crimbo - intend to sweep the hun from the sky at the earliest opportunity.

Also, what are you doing in front of one of Her Maj's big yellow whirly birds of freedom? I had you pinged as a pongo...

You may, if you were careful, and knew what to look for, have spotted me in the finest Prussian Blue loitering alongside the Westminster Abbey Battle of Britain parade in a smart, uniform and airman-like fashion this year!

Said big yellow bird is based at a large establishment in North Devon where people more of my Ilk hang out,
The nice people in blue let us play on their toys during my last visit.

Pongo? Bite your tongue Sir!
