If I came up with names for each of my guardsmen then I would spend half the time at the table weeping.
as for story; I like to rely on the one GW has made for my Cadians.
Naming: I haven't really named my guardsmen, though I named a few SMs
Story: I write mini-batreps for my guard in a storied form. I make them relate to each other. Lets just say quite a few companies have been wiped out.
Sadly most of my Vostroyans go un named save for Colonel Pabst of the Vostroyan 77th Firstborn. He bears the full title of Col Pabst Necron Fury bane! yeah its a bit left over from 4th edition lol. I've recently given him the nickname "the Big Bear". He keeps getting named after beer or cheap yet delicious malt liquor haha.
My Blood Angels on the other hand feature Sgt Michael J Fox (ala "Teen Wolf") and Hank and Dean Venture are both powerfist wielding members of my Veteran Assault Squad.

gonna name all of 'em, maybe give some some fluff
"STUPIDITY, If your going to do it, go for GOLD!"
I have named a good deal of them, and painted their names on the bases
But mine are chaos space marines, so its slightly. easier.
Actually, I name more of my Guardsmen than my Marines. I'm a writer at heart, so I like to write short stories about the exploits of my armies. So far, I've only really finished the "origin story" of my Marines, I'm still working on the one for my Guardsmen, but already I have more names in a page and a half of Guardsmen than I had in about 7 or 8 pages of Marines.
My Marines have Master-Admiral Proximous, Master of The Angels of Retribution, Admiral Gaius, Commander of the 4th Company, and Battle-Brother Brutus, of the 4th Company. (In my chapter, which is space based, each Company's commander is given permanent command of their attending Strike Cruisers and escorts, and are thus refered to as "Admirals" instead of Captians.)
My Guardsmen have Commisar-Colonel Demetri Rantham, commander of the 42nd Caananite Storm Regiment, then the scouts, Lieutenant Kong (who is my counts-as Harker) and Private Hurst of the 2nd Platoon, 7th Company ("The Lucky 7th", "The Pathfinders"), 42nd Caananite Storm, and the storm trooper, Sergeant "Ripper" Ripford of 3rd Squad, 1st Platoon, 6th Company ("The Avengers," "The Ever-Late Cavalry"). (Kudos to whoever can name the movie I got a lot of these names from)
I also have a few chracters from the Inquisition and AdMech, namely Inquisitor Lord Valgard and Inquisitor Titus of the Ordo Malleus and Techpriest Marvt of the Adeptus Mechanicus.
Proud Battlefleet Gothic evangelist. You got BFG questions? Just ask!
Check out my fancy BoLS user blog for stories, ideas, and army lists!
Ive named the regiment (Cadian 501st light) but thats about as far as Ive gone. If they were named Id probably use Sven Hassel novels as inspiration, there are some fantastic characters in them.
To a New Yorker like you a hero is some kinda weird sandwich, not some nut who takes on three Tigers!
Many of my Catachans are named after characters from the Predator movies...

My old gaming group used to name commanders and some other characters. And then write up stories after each game. We had a very long and convoluted set of background for a full 3 sectors by the end...
