    Ropes! -Part II

From here I'll add a little more Graveyard Earth, go over the twists on the ropes and add a little more Graveyard Earth and go over once more. The final step here is straight Graveyard Earth.

From here I'll move into adding Kommando Khaki to the Graveyard Earth for highlighting. These last two steps are only applied on the highest areas of the twists, the underside of the ropes under the tanks will get none of this paint - it enhances the depth. The last step is a touch of straight Kommando Khaki for a highlight.

Again, I've included the finished, Dulcote sprayed, burna along with the two I've just worked on for reference as to how it will look once sealed.

Thanks for looking and hope everyone enjoys these - maybe I'll do more...

Yipee! I'm kinda excited to start work on Zaggy tonight as I get to break out some new brushes I've been saving for a special character.

Here's the skin finished on Zagstruks head. I need to clean up the eye socket a bit as the camera shows all the uglies without any compassion.

No work until Wed night at the earliest as tomorrow is game night and I'm playing for the next tier (friendly competition pyramid at the LFGS) against the local Necron master. Should be interesting as I've played against Necrons the last two weeks and won both matches. He's definitely a better general than the last two. I'm not too worried though.

Went through and finished off Zaggy's head, or at least I thought I did til I saw his unfinished earrings in the pics....grrr. Oh well.

I did one more highlight layer before trying some NMM on the chains on the hat, not too bad for not having much experience doing that sort of thing.

I'm not going to try and re-imagine Zagstruk as he would look in my army so he'll be painted pretty much standard GW color scheme so no great surprises or ideas, just trying to do a really nice job.

    Thanks everyone!

Big update today! Well, maybe not big, but a lot of photos!

I fixed/finished Zag's head last night and whipped up a the head for the final burna for my Kommandos mob while I was waiting for Zagstruk's primer to dry. Here are both results...

Not too shabby for waiting around.

Here's your hobby tip/trick for the day. Hate sanding/scraping off paint to get clear, clean surfaces for gluing? Here's how to solve that. Get yourself some poster tack/sticky tack and put small amounts on the spots where you will be gluing the parts together down the road. Prime, then pull off the poster tack. Viola! Clean metal surfaces for glueing!

Ok, on to the real updates. All I got accomplished this morning was his pants and shirt. I had a mid-course correction on my paint scheme idea after looking around and making some decisions about what I was going to paint what. The original idea was to pretty much paint it verbatim to GW's version. After doing some research I thought it would be cool to do the upper parts of the mechanical power legs in black and only doing the klaw feet in bare metals so it would attract your attention better to what makes him special - those powerklaw feet!

I came to the conclusion that black hat, black clothes, black metal... you see where this is going. I was looking for a little more definition between parts so I choose a blue. It's still somewhat dark but doesn't blend right in with the metal uppers of the legs. It also give the leather straps going all over and around his legs something better to stand apart from. So with that in mind I went after a final color close to a lighter navy blue. Here's the process...

Necron Abyss Foundation - thinned like regular paint.

    Cont.

    Regal Blue of the foundation.

Regal Blue blended through four layers to Ultramarines Blue

Ultramarines Blue mixed two layers to a highlight of Hideous Blue (my favorite blue higlight color and no longer available... dang)

A thinned wash of Asurman Blue to blend the transitions and shift the brightness down a notch towards a more subdued blue - more like a worn Navy/Air Force jumpsuit than denim.

The highlights might seem a little bright yet but I know they're flatten out and not be so sharp after Dulcote sealing.

Started work on what I think is the most difficult part of this model for me. I've never tried this but I'm looking for a shaded black for the upper legs. I'll be going slow and I'm in no rush - I've got til the end of Jan to finish for the tourny - so here's the first whack at the shading part.

Now, this is a pretty advanced technique for me, shading into different colors. I've gone from Chaos Black to a bit of Codex Grey. Then I shaded the top of that with Chaos Black mixed with Space Wolves Gray to give it a little color and blue shade the black. Then I went over it with a very blended (hopefully) application of a small touch of Choas Black mixed with Kommando Khaki to give it a dusty, shaded appearance.

The photos at my workbench do an abysmal job of showing the shading as it's a fairly subtle application. I think it looks a bit messy at the moment but I will be adding a highlight along most of the edges to give the legs much more definition. I plan on doing the skull on the one knee white, the other knee will receive the checkerboard treatment and the rivets/bolt heads in actual metals.

I'm also going to attempt something I've read about on the feet. A NMM in metals technique. Maybe not literally, but that's the idea. I like the idea of the feet really standing out in the lower half so I'm hoping it works out.
