There's a really good chance I'm wrong, but isn't it just a 'blank' space? Aren't the saddles build into the riders?

It depends on which cold ones you're talking about. I don't remember on the Saruus ones, but the Dark Elf Cold Ones have really big saddles on their backs.

I think the saurus warrior models didn't have a saddle (plastic box of 8)...its been a quite since I built those...

Yep the Lizardmen Cold Ones have a blank space on their back as the saddles are built into the riders as wittdooly suggested.

Also they are a bit "blockier" than the Dark Elf Cold Ones which I think the fine cast model is based on.
