Amazingly, the price of a White Dwarf subscription with the new model is $95.75. If you purchase it with the current model, the Gyrocopter Pilot, it's still $88.25. The new model is Finecast so I guess the raised the model price about $7. That older model is about to be discontinued in a few days.

The current price without the model is still $75 US for one year, $140 for two years. I wonder how long that will last.

Rather than subsidizing $100 worth of ads for miniatures, as a consumer and not a stock-holder I think I'd rather just buy miniatures.

I'm pretty sure that's a Photoshop job on the magazine miniature images. They are too perfect and they appear to contain every detail reduced perfectly in size. It's a tool they use a lot these days for advertising images. It not only produces things even studio painters cannot produce by hand, it's quicker and cheaper than waiting for someone to paint intense levels of detail.

You can see more of this stunning miniature in November's issue of White Dwarf, including the exquisite level of detail that Joe Tomaszewski has painted on to it - there's a copy of White Dwarf magazine peeking out of the treasure chest and Joe has hand-painted all of the pages in it. Trust me, it's crazily good!

So the WD in the box is handpainted, though it doesn't mention those outside the box. I'd email and ask GW. Well I would if I cared enough, which I don't. But someone else could. I wouldn't say it is impossible to paint that well on such a small scale, I've seen it done. You wouldn't believe how often undergraduates minds get blown in the art history department when faced with centuries old paintings, thanks Photoshop.

Subscription Model Price Correction

There was an error in November and December's White Dwarf for the White Dwarf Subscription Model. The correct prices are:

Subscription Model: $20.75 US / $25 CAN

Subscription in a Box: $95.75 US / $110 CAN

Gyrocopter Pilot models generally fetch between $45 and $65 on eBay without too much trouble. I do still have one or two for trading.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I've seen things like that done, but they are not commonly possible even among accomplished artists and model painters. In other words, it's possible that those parts were hand painted using a magnifier, but not very likely. And given GW's inclination to using Photoshop more and more these days I found that to be much more likely.

It is a highly specialised skill, and requires a long time to do. It's almost beyond painting and more about patience and hand control than artistic talent. It could be photoshopped, but given that we know it is possible to hand paint like that, we don't really have any reason not to take them at face value when they say Joe hand painted it. After all, if it was 'shopped then they would just mention it rather than lie.
