Default Russ Veal on 8th Edition Tomb Kings

With the recent release of the new Vampire Counts army book, what better time to probe the mind of Russ Veal on the subject of... Tomb Kings?

No, of course this isn't an article planned for the website months ago that got forgotten about and is now back from the dead (bad pun intended), honest...

So, without further ado or delays (or forgetting about it), I present to you, well known UK undead player Russ Veal on 8th edition Tomb Kings.

this is a very interesting read, as a tomb king player I agree with a lot of his observations. Hopefully the can fix a few things via FAQ and errata.

Great read, I'm about to go up against a Tomb King army soon and this was some good intel on their abilities and units.

This is one of the more interesting reads on the TK's I've seen, and I sadly have to agree whoelheartedly. I play all undead, and I was a little disheartened when VC came out so soon after TK--TK being the only undead in town in 8th could have bolstered numbers a bit, and made GW take a closer look at them in the future. While the 8th release helped them, I think a lot of people are jumping to VC and TK will be left in the dust till 10th ed, when this cycle will probably repeat itself. Oh well, at least the models are great!

Am I the only person that doesn't agree with him?

I think a lot of his comments show a lack of imagination or clear understanding of how the army is supposed to work together. Like his dislike of the new MWBD and how now it is a constant buff rather than requiring casting a spell to go off. Or that WS-increased TG with halberds hit and can survive right alongside most of the hardcore elite units out there.

I just think that overall, the comments show how the meta in one area can really influence people's opinions.

In response to Blackthorne-
I think you're right. I've had lots of success with my Tomb Kings. Granted the book has a few stinkers but overall you can put pretty much anything in there and at least have a shot.
The magic is good, in 2k I use a lvl 4 Nehekara and 2 lvl 2 light wizards. Combined with a casket you'll have a decent magic phase.
Sphinxes are class, Tomb guard very solid and necropolis knights can be devastating if you cast Smiting on them and Dessication on their opponent.
I think overall the book is what it should be - balanced and has a chance against everything.

I agree with most of what he is saying, even if it is rather generic.

Regarding the TG example - T5 with a 6+ save can't survive alongside hardcore elite units, not even close. They may be able to compete against other armies' elite units but in no way is this because of Tomb Guards' survivability. Unfortunately, this is why HW+SH seems to be the red headed step child despite the price discount.
