Default so you mean to tell me.....

my fenrisian wolves have a better WS than my trained Astartes bloodclaws?!?!? i know this is well known but COME ON! i still like to include bloodclaws in my list, usually one 8 man pack with WG and wolf priest but i find it ridiculous they kept them at WS 3....

on another note: last weekend my thunder lord with 2 fenrisian wolves got charged by lysander, counter-attacked, completely whiffed with the lord but killed lysander before he could strike back with the two pet wolves. the dude rolled 4 (four!) ones.... epic.

Bloodclaws are drunk and headstrong. Wolves are wiser and keener (have to be to be on top of food chain in fenris). I like to think my friends bloodclaws got plastered and knocked up a couple of nids, hence the lower WS.

Same reason that a Zoanthrope, which hardly even has any arms, has the same weapon skill as a Hormagaunt, which was made specifically for close combat.

Its the way the cookie crumbles. The chapter master of the Black Templars doesn't even compete with a basic vanilla marine commander.
The Eye of Skreebo is upon ye. Skreebo expects.

That is partially due to using a dated codex. If i remember correctly all space marine commanders back then had WS 5. Though I didn't start playing space marines until 5th edition so i could be wrong.

If you're looking for internal balance, the SW codex is the wrong place to be searching.

You are correct that all the Space Marine commanders used to be WS5. It was in an era where 6 was nigh unheard of.

I can give my carnifex frag grenades so he can use his lowly initiative when charging into cover....but I can't give them to my genestealers or my hormagaunts. That makes a lot of sense to me.

One of a couple of things that bother me about the wolves codex. I run count as chaos warband and I'd love to have some jump packs in there but I refuse to have ws 3 combat specialists!

Is also like to have bikes, same problem.

I could use wolf guard but they're sooooo expensive to give the upgrades its just not worth it.

I'll stick to my juggernauts (thunderwolves)

lower WS or not a large pack with a wolf preast in a crusaider is alot of fun to run and works well. the unit is hard to kill and does a bang up job.
