How balanced is BFG? It looks like fun, but I don't feel like investing money in another game with balancing issues such as, if your army isn't updated you don't win. I get that feeling from 40k.

well, since updates from GW are quite rare, that problem will not arise.
Wether they are balanced enough, that is difficult.
Infinity - Ariadne, Fantasy - Wood Elves; 40k - Imperial Guard, Deathwing, Orks, Sisters of Battle; Battlefleet Gothic - Imperial Fleet;
I think faq2010 is pretty balanced but I am most convinced by the BFG:Revised rules. Some people will say that Necrons are overpowered but I think most people are just repeating a line they heard. I haven't had that experience.
I would say that BFG is not the most balanced game, but not in a way that will cost you money. The ships have been mostly the same for years and you won't need to buy new ones to update your fleet all the time. The Imperial and Chaos ships can even be magnetized to be whatever class you like really.
Where does one get this faq 2010 or the revised rules?
I have the original rule book and the BFG PDF books from the GW website. Is that what you mean?
