Pet peeve, along with vanilla being equated with 'plain' because industrially produced food produced vanilla flavoured products that don't taste of vanilla.

Yeh I know what you mean about this. Done properly, vanilla can be quite an intense flavour. While I was working in a hotel we had a vanilla creme brulee. Almost all the customers who had it said it was soo much nicer and more flavoursome than they were expecting. We also had a liquorice ice cream that was gorgous and a much softer, smoother flavour than most people expected.
