An author I follow suggested that Halloween is a huge deal in the USA because it's an inversion festival and the only one they have. The more regimented and classist the society, the bigger the corresponding inversion festivals tend to be. They're a pressure valve. Compare how huge and debauched Saturnalia was in ancient Rome to the strictness of its class roles, then look at the social stratification and lack of social mobility in the USA. The former is more extreme in both counts, but the USA is trotting down that path.
