Default Imperial Guard FOC and platoons?

Edit: Realised my first question was answered right under the platoon selection in the rules...

Question: Can I use a veteran squad as an infantry squad in a platoon, or does it need to be a separate unit?

I.e. I have a Platoon with an HQ, Infantry Squad and Veteran squad, is that legal?

    Not in the slightest

A Veteran Squad is a Troop choice by it's lonesome, just like a Penal Squad. An Infantry Platoon specifically stats what types of squads it can include under it's description in the army list: namely 1 Platoon Command Squad, 2-5 Infantry Squads, 0-5 Heavy Weapon Squads, 0-2 Special Weapon Squads, and 0-1 Conscript Squads.
The objective of the game is to win. The purpose of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

Vets are seperate squads and require a seperate FOC slot.
