Default PSA: GW now charging for bags

After the interwebz gremlins stole my post yesterday, here is a quick summary for everyone.

GW UK now charging 10p for a carrier bag (plastic bag for transporting goods from store to home for our transatlantic cousins). We are unclear if non-Uk stores are doing likewise. Some people felt that GW becoming more environmentally responsible was a good thing, others were outraged at the thought. 'Bags for life' are a waste of money and a con, re-using your old bags or taking in a proper one is the best option. There was some off topic stuff about the Yanks stealing Native American magic and perhaps some other stuff I forgot, but the key point is be prepared to pay for bags in all UK stores.

You totally missed out that all goods should be couried to your house and everyone should be forced to drive at around 55mph

Its 10p for a normal run of the mill black plastic bag.

The 50p bags for life are a durable drawstring variety.

Don't buy the durable ones, they are a scam! They take up so much energy in production you would have to use it around 400 times before you actually start to benefit the environment, and it will most likely break before then! Wow, de ja vu.

Given the price of the object 10p is a pitance to pay!

Also is there a price escalator based on bag size?

Can I just buy a small bag without making any purchase? (they make dinky sandwich bags to keep my pork pie and scotch eggs)

Yes but considering the price of the product the least you should expect is the means to carry it home. Combined with GW's general lack of change in it's tills.

And the pro-enviroment argument does nothing to address the issue of the worlds massive over population...

No, only Soylent Green will do that. However, if everyone in this country stopped using new carrier bags every time they went to the shops it would make a significant difference.

Edit: Or indeed they stopped going to the shops and ordered everything online.
