Default 40k Map Making software

Does anyone know of any map making software that would be suitable for 40k?

I'm running an "Only War" campaign at the minute and have to use microsoft paint, which is a tad rubbish. From what I've seen Vassal looks ok - does anyone know how to use it or if there is better map making equipment out there?
More Necromunda please.

I'm sure someone here would help you.

I think google maps lets you make custom maps, not sure what kind of map you're looking to make but it's worth a look.

Depends on what type of map you want to make. If you're looking to make something like D&D campaign maps or hex maps, I use Hexographer. The best part is the basic map maker is free but you can do a lot with it.

Here's an example I used for a recent 40K campaign:

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of countless millions who at the dawn of victory lay down to rest, and in resting died.

You can do a lot with the various bits of free drawing software out there - Paint.Net is my favourite but Gimp is pretty good also - or you can buy either a drawing program like Photoshop or specific software like Campaign Cartographer and its add-ons.

www.cartographersguild.com is a fantastic source of advice, as is the Profantasy forums for Campaign Cartographer and add-ons, and the Paint.Net forums have great advice for doing space-based stuff, helped me turn this out:

As Lunar Camel says, what type of maps do you want to do - battlefields, regions, entire planets, star systems, sub-sectors or bigger?

Depending on how detailed you want to be, you can find lots of maps that have already been created by other people and repurpose them for your own use. The Dundjinni Forums have lots of user-generated work. If an already finished image is close to what you are looking for, you can often just do a little editing in a photoshop type program. I prefer GIMP. It is free, and although it has a bit of a learning curve, the internet is chock full of tutorials and the software is very powerful.

Try Universe maker if you are after Starmaps. It's free and easy to use.
