I could never get into it, as they never seemed to show it in any semblance of order...

That was the movie wasn't it?

Captain Steven Hiller: [talking to the unconscious alien he’s dragging] Y’know, this was supposed to be my weekend off, but noooo. You got me out here draggin’ your heavy *** through the burnin’ desert with your dreadlocks stickin’ out the back of my parachute. You gotta come down here with an attitude, actin’ all big and bad…
    [yells]
Captain Steven Hiller: and what the hell is that smell?
    [starts kicking the alien, yelling]
Captain Steven Hiller: I could’ve been at a barbecue!
[kicks the alien one last time and calms down]
Captain Steven Hiller: But I ain’t mad.

lol, I meant the movie was mainly there for the dogfights, and blowing cities up.

The quote just happened to be on tumblr at the same time

Hah, I could see that. I watched it on Netflix, and thus did not have that problem. It still wasn't an exceptional show, but I liked it well enough. Not quite as well as Next Generation, perhaps (talk about stupid space battles) but better than TOS.

Hah, so did I. They were fun. Actually, I found that whole movie to be fun--stupid, sure, but still fun. Also, yeah--not really a space combat movie. Fighting in an atmosphere (any substantial fluid, really) is actually very different, mechanically.

Hiller's above rant in Independence Day is awesome. I liked the movie's battle scenes except for a shot during the battle over Area 51 that accidentally showed the LA skyline. Bad editing there.

One of the challenges Babylon 5 has/had is that the graphics look so bad it hurts the show, but I agree that the actual ship designs are pretty realistic, to the degree that any of this stuff is "realistic."

It seems to me that the closest analogy to space combat today would be submarine vs. submarine warfare. Hostile environment, any major breech likely means the whole crew dies, relatively little hope of rescue in a crippled vessel, no visual sighting of the enemy, very few projectiles but each one is enormously expensive and powerful, the first ship to detect the other has a huge advantage, etc. etc. -Not very visually exciting though.

A little bit. But it can turn both into scrap easily.

Fett has the Slave 1....The Slave 2 is a Ship from the books he gets after Return of the Jedi, And only till he gets the Slave 1 back.

I like Independence Day, as simple action films go it is quite enjoyable. Not pretentious, not too silly, just an entertaining alien invasion film.
Ask not the EldarGal a question, for she will give you three answers, all of which are puns and terrifying to know. Back off man, I'm a feminist. Ia! Ia! Gloppal Snode!
