    Default Neo Tau=MetaAwesome!!!

    New Tau book in my hot chubby little digits and all I have to say is "wow". This, played in tandem with Forgeworld will make Cron air think twice about EVER getting on the board.

    What's hot... Riptide. HOHLEE Schniekees I don't know why that's not considered a heavy choice because that thing is a beast. 5 wounds, T6, 2+sv/5+invul, two missile shield drones and an array of weapons... This thing is a serious bullet magnet. Which is good! While the OPFOR is concentrating on the deepstriking giant flying robot tearing up their line, the death from a thousand small cuts will be rolling up their flanks providing XV plasma sniper fire with new wargear and a new T5 XV warlord that will have you regretting that you ever snickered because the xenos DARED to come to the table at all... *

    *All dependent upon the dice gods of course.

    What're your favorite picks and pans from the new dex?

    Pathfinders are so awesome with the new ion rifle or rail rifle. Pulse accelerator makes carbines that much better as well. Farsight doesn't have any draw back, or did I miss something? Kroot sniper rounds sound awesome on an outflanking unit.

    Over an awesome codex, many inspiring units and more option in drones and wargear. Great first impression.

    The book has some decent variety but the lack of unit flexibility (was actually stripped from us in part by the day 0 FAQ limiting BS2 Missile Drones to Broadsides only) is going to result in it being an average book at best. Nothing is outrageously strong or overpowered but forced synergy is really going to hurt the army.

    With that said, Tau have definitely changed into a more dynamic army to play with things like infantry and fusion blasters being promoted with long range death like Broadsides getting the shaft. New Tau have to walk a fine line between auto-lose through getting assaulted and crushing the enemy through clever tricks and smart positioning. This is only made possible, in my opinion, thanks to 6th edition's pre-measuring because a book that needs to dance between 12" and 18" so finely or get absolutely rolled would be far too punishing in previous editions.

    Supporting fire and Overwatch Markerlights are a rather nice way of putting your opponent off of assaulting though. Even if they go for it, they're going to take a fair bit of damage before they make it into combat. Sure they'll beat up the poor Tau when they get there, but they'll have taken a heavy toll beforehand.

    Remember that without upgrades and additional support Overwatch is done at effective BS1. While support fire certainly helps the number of casualties you will inflict under normal circumstances are not too great. Also, with Tau, a couple of enemies getting to your line is enough to count that Tau unit dead.

    Support fire and overwatch shenanigans are a great net to fall back on but I wouldn't recommend making it your primary tactic when dealing with assault enemies. You will want to kite as long as possible and pour damage into the advancing units on your terms until the unit is weak enough to be definitely obliterated by the Tau's enhanced overwatch.

    especially when you consider how inexpensive flamers are on crisis suits. Those guns make great additions for Supporting Fire.

    Broadsides didn't get the shaft. Sure the railgun they have dropped two points in strength, but they got a hardwired multitracker (awesome), the ability to take a new drone (more awesome), SMS got better (even more awesome) and the ability to chuck out a metric crapton of missiles (god that's awesome). Essentially, with the right build, you can light up a unit, press the missile launch button and remove that entire unit from existence.
