You can object to doing it based on occupation, e.g. teachers can defer till the summer holidays for instance.

That's fairly reasonable.
And one assumes if you can prove a link to either party you'd be excused at least that case.

I got called for Jury Duty once, everybody else there was really annoyed because they were losing money, but I was thrilled because the Juror pay was significantly more than my temp contract with the government. but then after waiting round all day for it to begin, and it expected to last two weeks, the accused changed their pleas and we were all sent home, no trial. I was not happy, talk about a selfish criminal.

I'm not saying rape prevention campaigns aimed at men do or don't work but you really can't reliably draw any conclusion from the article. Interestingly, despite the reference to Edmonton:
http://www.edmontonsun.com/2012/01/26/sex-crimes-on-rise-in-city
So, the crime went down in Vancouver and up in Edmonton.
Were all other factors equal? It could be that the Edmonton increase was due to increased awareness and therefore reporting. We just don't know.
It'll be interesting to see some numbers if it is trialled further.
