Judging by the worrying pr0nz usage, that seems pretty likely.

However this case goes back many months were video of Ray Rice dragging his unconscious finace out of the elevator in February.Things moved quickly on NFL Monday.
At 4 a.m., TMZ released video showing Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice delivering a left cross to the face of his then-fiancée, Janay Palmer, in an Atlantic City casino elevator back on Feb. 15. Palmer was knocked out cold.
Reaction was predictable. Social media exploded and there were calls for Rice to be banished from the NFL. There were also suggestions that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell be fired if he had seen this video before handing out his hideous two-game suspension.
At 10:08 a.m., the NFL issued a statement in which it contended that the video was not available to the league when Goodell delivered his wrist-slap to Rice.
At 2:18 p.m., the Ravens announced that Rice had been released.
At 2:41 p.m., the NFL suspended Rice indefinitely.
The Ravens supported Rice from Day 1. Back in July, Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said, “I stand behind Ray. He’s a heck of a guy.’’ A Ravens vice president was allowed to publish an “I Like Ray Rice” missive. On May 23, the Ravens Twitter account sent out this: “Janay Rice says she deeply regrets the role that she played the night of the incident.’’
Wow. The team actually wanted us to go along with the dangerous notion that the woman was asking for it. The team went out of its way to remind us that Janay Rice regretted her role in getting KO’d by Ray Rice. The franchise used the battered woman to make things easier for her abusive, cowardly husband.
Just a few weeks ago, the Ravens home page featured a photo of Rice under a headline that read, “Ravens fans give Rice standing ovation.’’
Oh, and any time the Ravens were asked about punishing their own player, they said it was a league matter.
Oh and as to how society is geared to accept that it's ok to beat women (keep in mind he knocked her out):
He's recorded ON TAPE delivering a knockout punch to another human. Forget the league, how is he not in jail for violent assault charges? It's not like there is a lack of evidence. It should be an absolute slam dunk.

"Because he is famous" - is worryingly familiar.

The victim also has to pursue pressing charges. Which they seldom do. Ofttimes because they are too afraid (rightly so) of reprisals.
Nike also removed their endorsement of Rice, and EA pulled him from Madden.
However, that's just window dressing. Because the whole root of the problem is that these people, who are famous for one thing (be it being famous (Paris Hilton/Kardashians), athletic ability (Rice, Michael Vick), or talent (Chris Brown, Kanye West, Charlie Sheen, Sean Penn) are raised up in the public eye, put on pedestals, and rather than being held more accountable for their actions the public not only excuses them for it, but also shoves the memory of their wrongdoing away.
People like Rice, Vick et al should not be raking in millions. They should be shunned to the point of needing to say "would you like fries with that?" to make a living.

Worth noting that Kim Kardashian turned an ex leaking a ex tape of her into a multi-millionaire dollar business, bit more impressive than someone throwing a ball around really well in my opinion.
Ask not the EldarGal a question, for she will give you three answers, all of which are puns and terrifying to know. Back off man, I'm a feminist. Ia! Ia! Gloppal Snode!
I don't think an attempt to push that point through will end well. I don't even like sports and I know that "throwing a ball around" is a big understatement. Not saying I agree with their paychecks either, but I have a long list of people whose jobs I couldn't do that I think are grossly overpaid, like Ms Kardashian herself.

It's not much of an understatement though. The key difference is Kim Kardashian made that paycheck happen for herself while there is a vast infrastructure aimed at finding peopel good at throwing balls and getting them into a position where htey can throw ball for lots of money.
I have zero time for the bull**** worship of male athletes.

WHY does the victim need to press charges? I mean, the victim doesn't have to press charges for many other serious assaults like murder because it is seen in the public interest to remove violent thugs from the general population. (And yes, I know that a murder victim can hardly press charges in person, you all know what I'm meaning.)
