I've played one game with marines since 3rd edition. I was more thinking from the lines of wanting to paint the grizzled remains of the Crimson Fists. I've been collecting bitz and Fists parts for years to do that some day, but I don't have a lot of interest in painting more than 2 Tactical Squads.
What's the point of the Centurions???
Why not just make bigger terminators?

The reason for the sudden change in rules was simply the lack of survivability as they moved from 2nd ed 3+ save on 2d6 to the new 1 dice armor save. Storm shields used to only confer a 4+. The problem is that terminators are too expensive for their moderate durability. They don't have the firepower on the shooty side to make up for their points. Giving them back the ability to have two heavy weapons per 5 man squad would have resolved that but they have been stubborn. Two heavy's per squad would have made them more feasible.
Because they are not terminators.
They are Exo Suits for your Exosquad.
They really look awesome. Everything about them screams space marine.

I could see a few uses for the Centurions - the Iron Hands might make extensive use of them to make up for their lack of terminator suits that they lost during the heresy. I actually rather like the idea someone said earlier in the thread of them being weaponised construction/builder suits. Makes them more industrial too which suits my inner rivethead.
