I used to live in the arctic (born there, actually), where every day-to-day circumstances are rated in how many seconds you can survive it. Stand outside without a coat? Dead in under a minute. Fall in the ocean without survival gear? Dead in 6 seconds. Get wet? Hypothermic in under 10 seconds, dead in under a minute.
Friends and I used to joke it was just Mother Nature's way of saying she took us seriously - didn't take us for some soft, silly, pampered, city-living house pets. After all, you only actively try to kill what you consider a legitimate threat.
So, there you go. Australia isn't a death world, it just takes you seriously.
