can you do a lot of vehicle driving in Planetside or is it secondary to infantry stuff?

Once you cert (earned through experience) into reducing the vehicle spawn timer, and providing your faction controls enough resources you're limited to how good you are and can keep your vehicle alive.
If you join an outfit (The foundation - Vanu, Ceres ) you'll normally find a gunners seat available for you somewhere

You will die a lot, think I've got twenty days of play and just reached a KD of 1
best to find even numbered fights so you're not getting spawn camped, or stood waiting for a base to flip.

I shall see how it goes, downloaded a few free to play games lately, none have entirely grabbed me

Try and get the sony launcher rather than the prosiebian one.
Apparently if you do want to use the shop it works better, plus other minor advantages.
I unfortunately am stuck with the prosibian one as too time invested to switch...
